CHAPTER 1: The New Additions
“RUN TOLA RUN!”
A sweet but very excited voice shouted down the dimly lit corridor of the third floor inside the beautiful and enchanting Dulvar Palace. Tola was practically tripping over his own feet as he scrambled to the stairwell then jumped down each flight like a raging kangaroo. His thoughts were not of his own safety but only that of his wonderful niece Leana. It was a very exciting day as Leana was in labor ready to deliver her twins. There were bodies flailing about all trying to help their Queen and the delivery of the first known Dulvar Prince or Princess in over a hundred years. It was also the first time twins were to be born within the Palace walls, making this warm vibrant summer morning, a day of many great precedents.
“Tola is on his way down to the infirmary as we speak, to get Arga and some of the nurses to help deliver these wonderful bundles of joy!” Ciara said nervously. “Your mother is still here across from you. It looks like she may go into labor too with the way she is sympathizing with you. I can bring her a little closer for now but we may need to move her if Arga needs the room, ok sweetie.”
“Yes mama…….please bring her over. I want us to do this together if possible.” Leana cried as she grabbed her other mother’s hand. “We are always much stronger together.”
Ciara rolled her wife’s cot closer to their daughter as this was a very rare occasion for mother and daughter to be delivering at the same time. A child and a grandchild will be born today and the excitement is too much for any single person to contain. The news of this joyous event had spread like wildfire early that morning as Leana herself announced to the entire Palace of her commencement in labor. She was applauded with great joy and excitement while partaking in the morning’s breakfast. Her mother Ciara, who was once the Palace Healer, has been extremely busy as babies were being born nearly every week. Arga is the new healer, who Ciara had trained as her replacement, but has had no experience with childbirth until the most recent months. The two were present for every birth since the first day of springtime and formed a very strong and special bond together. Arga is a much older Dulvar Skirmisher who was once a slave in the mines of the Shrouded Temple, the likes of which is now long gone.
“Arga, I need you to set up a separate team for each patient so we have enough help, ok my friend?” Ciara asked politely, yet somewhat impatiently.
“Already done. Three behind you are assisting the Queen and two assisting your wife. I already sent for clean towels, hot water, bandages along with sutures, alcohol and clean tunics for us all.” Arga replied proudly.
“My, aren’t we ready this morning? Make sure you eat something now because it’s gonna be a while before we can touch anything besides our patients and their children.” Ciara demanded.
“I just finished my breakfast and have a dry lunch packed in the cupboard, I’m ready to go. Let’s get these tiny loves delivered.” Arga replied as she seemed very alert and focused.
Tola came back, completely out of breath, with nearly everything Arga requested. He carefully dropped them on the empty cart and approached his sister but was immediately pushed out by the warden. Arga herself was a little over six feet tall and very stout. She was drafted into the High Queens military at a tender young age and has more experience with medicine and surgery than anyone in the Palace. She had the warmth of an ice cube and the demeanor of a drill instructor. She almost always wears a charcoal and auburn dyed tunic with saddle brown boots, sash and arm bands as gauntlets are much too clumsy for such precise tools she calls her hands. Her long dreadlocks are tied up in a bun and covered when with her patients, but flow down to the back of her calves when she is amongst her friends. She has a very toned but somewhat scarred face that unfortunately matched the rest of her body. Most are blatant reminders, courtesy of Aquina’s horde while she was enslaved for nearly a decade. But her love for the Dulvar is far stronger than her figure as she lives and breathes only to help her people.
“But…...but…I…didn’t…….geez…….alright I’ll leave. No need to be so pushy.” Tola yelled back at Arga.
“I’ve watched you wash your hands and I’m surprised you’re still alive with all those germs and parasites you host on your skin. You are not getting anywhere near these delicate creatures until you shower, shave and scrub those rotten hands with alcohol. Even then I might not let you into the Queen’s chambers just because I don’t like you.” Arga yelled back
“Well I guess I don’t need to worry if they are getting the best care. You may not like me but I have the utmost respect for you now.” Said Tola just before she closed the door on his head. Tola jumped back just in time before he got not only his beard but possibly even his nose trimmed by the door. He just laughed for a moment as he saw Kana sitting on the floor near the wall. “You get kicked out too?”
“Yeah. She’s a freaking...nevermind. I think she’s gonna take great care of them, so now I feel a lot better.” Said Kana. “I really wanted to be there for them but I’m sure if they need me she’ll make an exception. But if I were you, I wouldn’t even be seen around here. She might toss you out a window or something. I mean look at those fingernails…..How can you even stomach putting those nasty things in your mouth when you eat? You are so gross sometimes!”
“It’s funny your mother asks me the same thing quite often and I just tell her that it’s the same fingers I use to prepare her dinner with. She now begs me not to cook or clean…..so yeah it’s gross but it gets me out of doing mundane stuff.” Tola replied with a bit of pride in his voice. “Uhhhh…..I probably shouldn’t have told you that!”
“Yeah, probably not.” She replied as she shook her head slightly and closed her eyes. “Hira tried that but I poured boiling water on his hands and cleaned them real quick. He never tried that again.”
“Wow, you are savage!” He said while sitting down, just across from her. “That poor guy.”
“Poor guy? I’m so freaking nice to him…...he’s rich with love, amongst other things!” She snapped at her father. “Even your mother can’t believe how spoiled he is. He gets tickles and massages all the time. He even likes it when I rub his…”
“Please don’t elaborate…...I don’t want to know.” He said.
“Oh, I see. Shya is younger than I am, but she can talk about sex with you!” She yelled.
“That…...that did not sound right at all. So don’t ever repeat that phrase. And besides, Shya is not my daughter. Buuutttt, if you really want to talk about it, then let’s talk. You see your mother really likes it when I tou……”
“PLEASE NO!” She screamed. “OK, OK I SEE YOUR POINT.”
“Besides the one on the top of my head you mean?” Tola asked as he couldn’t help but laugh.
“UHHHHHH. YOU ARE SUCH A GOOBER!” She screamed even louder while reaching her leg out and kicking him in the thigh.
He tried to kick her back but she swung her leg out straight and blocked him from moving. He just stared at her, completely amazed at her perception of him. He spent a lot of his time training her but she was now the master, and he, the apprentice. He smiled as he tried to push down the pain a little hoping she wouldn’t notice. Unfortunately she did see the slight grimace in his face but didn’t really seem to care. He tapped her foot gently then just closed his eyes then laid back to get some rest. She stood up and walked over to her father and sat down next to him as he put his arm around her neck and pulled her close.
“You know there isn’t a man alive that deserves you.” He said warmly.
“Yeah……..I know.” She replied as she turned away and stared down the hall with a somewhat serious look. She was trying to stay calm but her father knew she was extremely anxious to see the babies.
The door to the Queen’s quarters opened just a bit as Ciara came rushing out. She ran down the hall and descended the stairwell smiling, but in quite a hurry. The two thought nothing of it as she always runs like a lunatic when she is working here in the Palace. Tola opened one eye as he watched, the complete blur he called his sister, disappearing down to the floors below. He closed his eyes and tried to block everything out except the sounds of his own beating heart. It helps him calm down whenever he is anxious and also when he can’t be with his wife. He wasn’t sure how long it would be before they had any news so he decided to control his breathing and listen to the sweet melody beating in his chest.
Only minutes went by when Ciara went running by again but this time with Deana in tow. The two stopped just in front of them and immediately woke Kana up. She was a bit groggy but they helped her to her feet and with a burst of adrenaline, she immediately perked right up. Tola stood up too thinking he was going with them but Ciara pushed him back down as if she was scolding a disobedient child.
“You haven’t washed and we can’t afford to have you anywhere near the babies yet.” Ciara cried. “Sorry Tola, Arga’s orders.”
“All three are arriving right now! Get a move on people!” Arga yelled as she poked her head out the door. “Leave the filthy rat on the floor and get in here.” They gave Tola a look of pity but quickly got over it because of course the babies were almost here. They rushed into the room and slammed the door behind them.
“That’s alright…….I’ll just stay here, don’t worry about me.” Tola whispered to himself as there was not another soul on that floor. “I’ll be fine sitting here on the cold floor playing with my damn buttons while you get to kiss the newborns.” He sat there quietly for a few minutes when he had the best idea. He decided to head to the lowest level and visit the wonderful brewery that he hasn’t been to in a few years. “If anyone needs me…...I’ll be at the brewery sipping my…...Great! Now I’m talking to myself. Way to prove your sanity there Tola. Way to go buddy!”
He immediately stopped talking, rushed down to the brewery and found his favorite and most comfortable seat. It brought back many memories as he could see old war relics and antique weapons hanging from the walls alongside some old rusty Dulvar shields. He would sit for hours thinking about the mysteries behind these treasures and the beings who once possessed them. It was indeed part of his own heritage as he too has some Dulvar blood coursing through his veins. His recollection of the language has returned a bit, so he tried to order his favorite brew in his native tongue.
The brewmaster, who knows him by name, approached with open arms. Tola immediately stood up and hugged him as if seeing an old friend. The two sat down and chatted a bit while sipping a delicious pint from their vast collection. They talked mostly about their Queen and how she has so greatly improved their lives here in the place they call home. They shared old war stories, which are the exact same ones as before, only they get better each time they tell them.
After a couple delicious pints Tola decided to pay a visit to his favorite nurse, THE COMMANDER, as he calls her, to see if the little ones are now sharing the same air as everyone. He wasn’t drunk but decided to not let the effects of the alcohol impair his ability to run, just to end up with his face pressed to the floor. He walked calmly and happily back upstairs where he could immediately hear crying from the end of the corridor. He wasn’t sure if it was happy or sad and he became a bit alarmed. As fear tried to overtake his joy he started to panic and darted down to the Queen’s chambers. There was a crowd just outside the door, pressing their fat heads to the wood, so he couldn’t get through none too easily. He retraced his steps as he now rushed to the washroom and tucked his hair under his cap. He grabbed a scrubbing brush and went spastic on his fingernails before drenching them in alcohol all the way up to his elbows. He frantically ran out into the hall and pushed his way through until he came face to face with…HER. He looked dead in her eyes and didn’t back away in the slightest as he firmly began to speak.
“I need to see my niece and my sister, RIGHT THIS MINUTE!” He demanded. “I scrubbed my hands, my arms, my face and nearly drowned myself in alcohol. Please let me in.”
“Well…Judging by your breath, I believe the drowning in alcohol bit.” Arga yelled. “Your hands look much improved and you look like a much more serious man, as this is truly a serious endeavor. You’ll be happy to know you are a great uncle to a beautiful Dulvar Prince and Princess. Your niece is doing very well as are her little miracles. Your sister is in the middle of labor but there is a slight complication. The baby is breech which means he is coming out feet first. We need to try to turn him around inside the womb, otherwise he may need to cut your sister to get him out. That is very dangerous and poses a high risk of complications for the mother. Do you understand what I’m telling you?” Arga asked.
“Yes!” Tola cried. “Can I go be with her?”
“Yes, but do not touch anything except her hands. She already has her sister by her side but you being there might help them both calm down a bit.” She replied.
Tola rushed in and kneeled down by his sister’s bed. She was sweating and very fidgety as Deana was there next to her squeezing her hand tightly. They both looked over at Tola and smiled from ear to ear. Rayla leaned over and began puckering her lips waiting for a kiss. He carefully leaned closer to her face desperately hoping not to touch anything else. He leaned his cheek closer but instead of a sweet kiss, she stuck out her tongue and licked him. He pulled away and winced as she and his wife started laughing hysterically. He chuckled a bit then kissed his sister on her forehead before kissing his wife. He kneeled back down and wrapped his arms around hers as he was feeling much happier. Just as he gripped her hand, she squeezed tightly and pulled him closer as she was having a fairly strong contraction. Tola thought that at any moment his arm was going to be ripped clean from its socket so he closed his eyes and tightened his grip. Deana looked over and began laughing.
“C’mon tough guy…...it’s only a contraction. I’ve been here for about twenty of those.” Deana said while shaking her head slightly. “Only a couple more and the baby will be out. Tola, You hold tight and I’ll go see if she is fully dilated.”
“How?...Ohhhh, nevermind. I’ll let you do the honors.” He replied. “That’s best left to the professionals because I definitely don’t know my way around that area.”
“Most men don’t. That’s why I married a woman!” His sister cried.
“That’s a cheap shot there, Miss Rayla. But I totally agree with you on that one.” Tola replied as he rested his head on his sister’s arm. “Ciara has made you happier than I have ever seen you. She is an amazing person, just like my wife.”
“And Daughters!” Kana yelled from across the room holding her niece firmly.
“And niece.” Leana hollered as she cradled her newborn son.
“Ok, ok I get the point.” He replied. “Sorry I was so thoughtless.”
“Don’t you need a brain to have a thought?” Arga asked
The entire room burst out laughing as they never expected the most serious person they knew to have such a good, well timed, sarcastic response. She smiled just a little as she looked at Tola and winked. She kneeled down next to Deana and assisted in her examination. She immediately looked up at Rayla and gave her the thumbs up indicating to her that they finally got the baby turned around and that she was also fully dilated. She quickly adjusted her position then basically just pushed Deana completely to the side. Deana did not look upset at all but instead had a much relieved look on her face when Agra took over. She knows that she only has experience making babies while Arga has a bit more experience at delivering them.
“Next contraction, I want you to go ahead and give us a good strong push. Tola and Deana grab her arms and be ready. It will be any second now.” Arga shouted.
Within seconds Rayla began to fidget then suddenly it happened. She gripped down hard on her brother and sisters arms as she had the strongest contraction as of yet. She barely made a noise as she curled herself up and pushed. Arga was smiling ear to ear which nobody had ever seen her do, until now. As Rayla finished pushing and tried to take a break she knew at that moment the struggle was over. She smiled intensely as she saw the soft tuft of hair draping softly over Arga’s sturdy hands. Her baby was finally out in their beautiful world and she was now extremely anxious to hold her son. But before he was passed to his mother, Arga quickly grabbed the little boy by his legs and inverted him. With a couple coughs and an ear piercing cry the little one cleared it’s throat and began wailing. Rayla saw her tiny little miracle and started crying as in such a brief moment her life had immediately changed paths. She was a mother now more than a warrior and her new battles would include spit ups, dirty diapers and whole home destruction for the next decade or so. She immediately reached out to grasp her son and Arga happily obliged while she continued clearing the little one’s mouth, neck and gills. Rayla lifted her son over her face and gave him the most endearing and softest kiss on his belly and forehead before wrapping her arms completely around him, pressing him close to her warm soft skin. He stopped crying almost immediately when he heard his mother’s voice and felt her warm touch.
Deana began crying again as her face was already red and puffy from the moment the twins were born. She remembered the day when her little Gemma was born and the feelings she had of holding her for the first time. She immediately grabbed the little one’s foot and began playing with the littlest toes she could remember ever touching. Arga finished tying the last few sutures on the mother then began focusing on the little one. She performed a full check up which made the baby cry a bit, but her poking and prodding was very swift and precise as she finished rather quickly. She leaned over and kissed his forehead just as she did for the twins, then left the room so that the family could celebrate quietly.
Tola was not at all happy about her leaving so abruptly, so he ran out the door after her, stopping her in the hallway. “Please don’t leave yet. We want you to be there with us if you can. You have done something wonderful for our family and we wish to return the favor. Please celebrate with us because we consider you as part of the family, even after the insults you hurled at me.” Tola cried.
“You consider me as family?” She asked as she seemed shocked. “Why me? I’m not anyone’s family. I am a warrior first, healer second. There is no third I guess. I haven’t anyone to share my life with. My home is always empty, which is why I work all the time.”
“I’m so sorry.” He replied sadly. “Ciara thinks very highly of you and that means a lot to all of us. She is definitely the second hardest worker I know, and believe me that’s coming from a guy who doesn’t stop until I can’t physically move.”
“So I suppose you are first judging by your arrogance.” She snapped.
“NO!” He replied. “After watching you work, you are.”
“That’s very kind of you to say. Most aren’t nearly as kind because of my appearance. Many look at me as a battle scarred washed up soldier who has no life. I’ve helped hundreds of Dulvar, Brevian and Sidoan people throughout my life. I helped save my fellow slaves even when some of them wished to die. My whole life has been dedicated to helping those who reject me. Why is your family different?” She asked as she began to sniffle and seemed to be getting all choked up.
“I have spent my youth training to kill your people. Unfortunately my training has paid off as I have killed more than I can count. But it was one small child who reached out to me, stared into my soul and changed me forever. She had no secret powers or magical enchantments, just pure, unconditional love. She was a young girl, a Dulvar Spirit who was injured and with just a single look, trusted me to take care of her without even knowing me. She saw through my rough exterior and my blood soaked armor and saw kindness and compassion in my heart and my soul. I don’t judge by looks, by race or color of your skin, but by your actions. Your actions have proven to all of us that you are a person who we not only wish, but need as part of our family. I tell you for all of us, from the bottom of our hearts, we need you. So whatever can we do for you to prove it?” He asked lovingly.
“I don’t know what to say.” She cried. “You don’t see me as a monster like the others?”
“Monsters are identified by their repulsive actions which directly reflect what is in their heart, not by their appearance. You are beautiful inside and out. Scars just tell the story of your heroic life and I respect that immensely.” He replied as he took her hand and kissed it. “Please accept this official invitation into our family.”
“You are not very bright, but you are kind.” She scoffed. “If you truly want me as part of your family… then I accept.”
Tola reached up and hugged her but she is a bit taller than he is so he has to stand on the tips of his toes to reach. She wrapped her arms around his chest, directly under his armpits and lifted him up off the ground. She began shaking him while his feet flopped around like a child hugging a much loved doll. He laughed a bit but then tried hard to get down as he thought he started hearing his bones and joints cracking. She dropped him then followed him back to the Queen’s quarters. Everyone was surprised when she walked through the door again because they thought they wouldn’t be seeing her anytime soon. Deana wasted no time as she jumped up and straight to Arga’s arms. She tried hard not to cry but after seeing all the happy smiling faces she dropped to the floor and began to sob.
“TOLA! WHAT DID YOU DO?” Deana screamed. “DID YOU YELL AT HER FOR MOCKING YOU?”
“No. I told her how much we needed her to be part of our family.” He answered promptly. “I was nice to her, I promise.”
Deana kneeled down next to Arga and wrapped her arms around her as she did the same. Kana glanced over and immediately ran over to join them. “You are part of our family now so stop fighting it!” Deana said firmly.
“Oh, you people are the best. NOW GO WASH YOUR DAMN HANDS!” Arga shouted.
Deana, Kana and Ciara began taking turns caring for the new mothers and their precious offspring. They would rotate out frequently so that Arga could get some much needed rest. Nearly everyone worked around the clock helping out with keeping the Queen’s quarters clean and tidy. Hira and Tola were soon tossed out because they were making more messes than they were cleaning. However they would peek in from time to time, usually bringing food or beverages along with them. They were both trying to be helpful but a woman’s world is not even in the same universe as a man’s, as Kana explained to them in a not so kind way. The two decided to take refuge in the brewery once again until they were absolutely needed.
As they sat together, two distinctly different brothers, they began swapping stories and talking about their very different lives before reuniting. They each found out that they actually have more in common than they originally thought. Hira explained that once had a whole family of geese that he used to swim with during the warmer seasons and also the fact that he too never cared for eating fish. They even laughed about their childhood antics they used to play on their Elders. Tola was about to tell a good story when Arga walked in and stood in front of their table. Her eyes were red and swollen as if she had been crying for a good while. She said not a word as she seemed to be much too afraid to speak.
“What’s on your mind Arga?” Tola asked. “Have a seat with us and let’s talk.”
“You said that you consider me as family and would do anything for me didn’t you?” She asked quietly. “Did you mean what you said?”
“Absolutely.” Tola replied as Hira nodded in agreement.
“On the ceiling of the Sidoan Temple there are maps which are hand carved into the stone and very intricately painted. Did you see them?” She asked.
“Yes we did. Are you going to tell us about the other Dulvar Temple south of the Solemn Forest?” He asked.
“You are very observant my friend.” She responded.
“Brother. I’m your brother and so is Hira here. You are our family, so you can ask your brothers anything. We owe you and will give our last breath helping you if needed, because that is what it means to be part of our family.” Tola replied.
“Have you seen Shya since you have been here at the Palace?” She asked.
“I have not. Is she in trouble? Did she go to the southern Dulvar Temple?” Tola inquired nervously.
“I am afraid so. She has been gone for a few months and I am extremely worried as are her sisters. Leana won’t say it but she is afraid something may have happened to her. I love her like my own daughter. She and her asshole boyfriend broke up because he was in love with Korra, amongst others. They got caught being a little too friendly but Korra denies any such involvement. She may be truthful but Shya lost it and told her she was going on an adventure, alone. She took Jade with her but I’m still afraid for them.” Arga cried.
“Who is Jade?” Hira asked.
“That naughty beast she tamed. She will not part with it. It even sleeps in her cottage with her inside the town because she won’t stay in the Palace. She visits us from time to time but never stays very long. I am so afraid for her. She is very strong willed and even more so than any other Dulvar I’ve ever met.” Arga said quietly in between sniffles.
“Did she say anything to you about what she was looking for when she got there?” Hira asked. “That Palace is only a myth at this point. The river through the Solemn Forrest takes you to the Great Chasm but no further. I’ve studied my map forwards and backwards and I don’t see any other way to get across.”
“What map?” Tola asked.
“I took the liberty of drawing those maps of the southern Dulvar Palace and the Southern lake specifically.” Hira responded. “There is definitely another region to the west, but it is definitely not passable on foot due to the scorching lava flowing inside the Great Chasm. If the Queen could send a team of Skirmishers to brave the heat and maybe find a way to cross it we might have a chance. Unfortunately the air is deadly to us even with the nest designed neck wraps. They would dry out and kill us before we even knew we were experiencing breathing problems. We can’t risk it and hopefully Shya didn’t either.”
“Have you spoken to her about this?” Tola asked firmly. “If you knew about this why didn’t you tell her or at least me?”
“Calm yourself brother. I did not know it even existed until I saw the maps on the ceiling. I’ve seen those maps before but I was just a lad then. Dolan himself founded the village just south of the Palace. He was driven off by our people, is what our mother told me. She thinks there once was a passable route but the last volcanic eruption destroyed it.” Hira explained.
“So there could be other villages and people on the other side is what I’m hearing.” Arga said while reaching for Hira’s arm. “Show me the map!”
Hira reached into his tunic and took a disheveled piece of parchment with a bunch of hand drawn lines and images. He glanced at it for a moment before handing it over. She briefly studied the map and located the village and Southern Dulvar Palace just a bit south of the Solemn Forest. She handed him back the paper and walked away. “We must form a team and go look for her. That stubborn girl needs an ass whooping for going off alone.”
“I agree!” Replied Tola. “But then we’ll embrace her and be thankful we found her. That beast is extremely powerful and will do well to protect her. I’m not terribly worried but still…..”
“We need to approve this with the Queen first.” Hira suggested. “We may require the help of her team of Spirits to assist us as well. There have been rumors of raider hordes inhabiting those swampy regions near the chasm. They are said to be vicious murderers and stop at nothing to get what they desire. They are of unknown origin, so we need the best warriors at our side. We have to properly assess the situation but be prepared for anything.”
“I agree!” Arga replied. “Tola should be the one to speak with her because she knows and trusts him the most. If he can’t convince her of our plight then nobody can.”
Tola stood up, patted Hira on the shoulder then immediately left the brewery. Hira and Arga stayed behind, planning the trip as they patiently awaited Tola’s return. He found his way to the Queen’s quarters and quietly approached the Queen. She was barely awake and holding both of her babies who were sound asleep. He walked over to the washroom, doused his hand in alcohol then returned to talk. She smiled ever so slightly as her eyes were very heavy. Her mate was there in the room and was sound asleep on a cot.
“You look worried Uncle Tola.” She whispered. “Is it about Shya?”
“Yes…...how…...how did you know?” He asked.
“Because you love her and she hasn’t been here in quite some time.” She answered with a brief chuckle. “Aren’t my babies beautiful? They are the most beautiful things I’ve ever laid my eyes on. Can you help me with names?”
“Of course I can but wouldn’t you rather the ladies help you?” He asked. “I’m no good at names as I call my duck friends mama duck and papa duck. The ducklings I call one, two, three, four and five.”
“Ok, good to know. But I still would like you to give me an idea of a boy’s name. If Gemma was born a boy what name would you have chosen?” She asked persistently. “C’mon you had to have thought about it, didn’t you?”
“Well, Ian was always a favorite but there’s already an Ian in our village, he’s the blacksmith. Caden is a name Deana wanted. That was her grandfather’s name. Kana was her grandmother’s so that’s probably what we would have chosen.” He answered with a smile.
“Caden it is then.” She replied joyfully. “Caden and Nora are their names. Thank you. I was struggling with this for…...well, since I found out I was pregnant. My husband is such a good man. He reminds me of you only……”
“Taller?” He asked as he scrunched his nose and squinted his eyes.
“I was gonna say Dulvar, so you can’t put this on me. You said it, I didn’t.” She laughed as she handed little Caden over to him.
He looked at the tiny little figure wrapped in the softest cotton the Dulvar had ever produced. It was strong yet as smooth as silk. It wrapped around his tiny torso and arms like a perfectly coiled sweet roll but it’s contents were so much sweeter. He lifted the little boy to his shoulder and kissed his tiny nose. His eyes opened slightly as a little smile seemed to have formed. He opened his mouth wide and yawned then fell back to sleep. Tola stared at this little miracle and began to think about the day Gemma was born. He cried for three days because he couldn’t believe he helped create such an amazing being. He looked at Leana and she was now fast asleep. He got up and walked over to his wife who was sitting quietly holding Rayla’s baby boy Ethan. She stood up right next to her husband, stole a quick kiss then handed little Ethan over to him. His skin was a bit lighter in complexion but had the same blue eyes that his mother had only bigger and brighter. He stood very still and just stared at the little bundles in his arms. It was indeed a most wonderful day for their families.
“Deana …...quick…...come here quick.” He demanded
“What is it?” She asked as she rushed over to him.
“Scratch my nose please, right on the bridge near my eye. I can’t do it and it’s driving me nuts.” He exclaimed.
She reached over and took back Ethan then immediately gave him to his mother. She then scooped up Caden and started backing away. “There, you can scratch your own nose buddy.” She said as she stuck out her tongue then started kissing Caden.
Tola looked like such a helpless soul now that he had no babies to hold. He tried to take him back but she was too quick and pulled away in the nick of time. Tola then sat down on the floor and began pouting. He looked around and didn’t see a baby he could grab so he waited patiently. After a few minutes Odin walked over to him and sat on his lap with a sweet roll and a small bottle of milk. Tola wrapped his arms around him and was now very happy. Kana looked on and just smiled as her boy and his grandfather got to spend a little time together. Odin, who is now nearly two, rested in his grandfather’s arms and fell fast asleep. Kana had been struggling all day with him to take a nap but he wouldn’t do it. She sat down next to her father and leaned against his shoulder.
“I know you probably came here to talk to Leana but you got caught up in everything that is going on.” She whispered softly. “Are you going out to look for Shya? I think she said something about finding the dire wolf’s family or something like that. There are a few writings about dire wolves here in the library. There’s a whole section on different species of animals and she found some information about her friend. She is actually pretty amazing. Old Dulvar lore said she was a vicious beast that hunted and killed all races of people. I don’t believe that for a second after seeing that sweet, sweet animal.”
“Sweet …...BIG…...animal!” Tola cried. “I hope Shya knows what she is doing. Those areas have not been surveyed in ages I bet. I’ve never been past the Solemn Forest because of the chasm past the tree line. It gives me the creeps…that bottomless void.”
“I believe that there is still a bridge at the southernmost edge of the Forest perimeter. It is a long rope bridge suspended high above the intense heat, but I think it’s still passable if you are careful. It’s very long and the chasm is very hot and windy at times. I’ve gone on it part way but got too nervous to cross completely. Of course that was a few years ago. I bet Shya had the courage to do it though.” She said nervously. “Still, I am worried about her.”
“Yeah me too.” He replied.
“Mama told me you are in love with her. Is it true?” She asked.
“I don’t know what I feel. Part of me says yes and that she could be a wonderful wife and part of me says no. She is so stubborn at times and others she is the sweetest woman. My feelings for her are like the rapids, flowing constantly but always changing direction. Your mother once said she would take her as her wife too. I Don’t know if she meant it or not, but that’s what she told her in front of me, the last time I saw her.” Tola cried softly.
“So why didn’t you?” Asked Kana. “I know she’s my age but she really wants a husband and a family. Why not be the one to give that to her? If your wife has accepted it then she would be a lucky person to have you and her as mates.”
“I don’t know.” He replied. “I feel a bit uncomfortable taking a younger woman into our home. It’s like we are adopting you all over again. I know it’s not at all the same but that’s what it feels like to me. I just want her to be happy and find love.”
“Didn’t she already do that?” She asked cleverly. “It seems you want her to be happy but not make your wife unhappy. I don’t think that would be the case. They would both be very happy to be married to you. That is what I think.”
“Would you allow Hira to take Shya as his wife?” He asked.
“HELL NO! I would string him up a tree, by his balls if he ever told me that.” She yelled. “Oops, I should be more quiet. I don't want to wake the babies, they are all sleeping and it’s a wonderful thing.”
“I thought as much.” He said softly. “I should focus on my love for my wife and not worry so much about Shya. If she finds someone then I will feel much better about the whole thing. Besides, she is very attractive and can have her pick of just about anyone. She just needs to open her mind and her heart and maybe she’ll see love right in front of her.”
“I hope so. I feel bad for her.” She cried. “She is so sweet yet so shy sometimes. Maybe we can find someone for her from our village. A farmer or blacksmith perhaps. Is Ian available?”
“I’m not sure.” He replied as he began scratching his head. “I never introduced them, I guess. He’s a bit shy too from what your mother says. He did have a thing for Leana I thought.”
“He did, but as soon as she was bequeathed the role of High Queen he backed away.” She responded. “He definitely has a thing for Dulvar girls though.”
The two suddenly became very quiet as they seemed to be the only ones awake at this point. It was nearly midnight and most Palace shops had already closed down. Hira and Arga poked their heads into the Queen’s chambers and spotted Tola. He shook his head and went back to sleep. Arga laid down on a cot near the door as Hira laid down next to his love. He grabbed Odin and snuggled him in between him and his mother then fell fast asleep. Ciara was passed out sitting backwards on a chair with her head and arms hanging over the back. It looked very uncomfortable but somehow she managed to fall asleep despite that.
Korra is now acting Queen in Leana’s absence and has ordered the Palace to be locked down. There were no threats or conflicts of any kind but at this point she trusts no one to enter the Palace grounds during such a delicate time. Kidnapping the Queen’s offspring could be detrimental to their fragile existence and she would be damned if she would ever let that happen. Her dedication to the Queen has earned her a great deal of trust. In fact, Leana trusts her the most out of any Dulvar, including Kana herself, to lead her battalions and to care of her people. They often confide in one another as there is an extremely strong bond between sisters. Kana sometimes gets a bit jealous but also knows she is doing what’s best for everyone as Korra was born to lead. She is a strong and cunning warrior but also a smart and compassionate leader. She often gives to those who are in need without expecting anything in return. She helps Leana with her duties yet never even asks for or hints at a reward. She is selfless and caring which definitely makes her the best candidate to lead their people.
“Kana!” Korra whispered through the window. “Kana, can you hear me? Are you awake?”
Kana heard Korra’s voice and slowly crept to the outside window. She looked down and saw Korra and about twenty Spirits all dressed up as if they were going out on the town. “What the freak are you ladies doing?”
“We are going to the village to dance and hang out with the villagers. They are celebrating right now and want us to join them.” Korra whispered.
“Aren’t you the acting Queen?” She asked sternly. “Do you think you should be doing this seeing you have a great responsibility to this Palace and to my sister?”
“It’s just one night. They will be getting back to work in the morning so we won’t be able to drink too much anyway. There’s cute guys there too.” Korra replied.
“I have a boyfriend…...I can’t do this.” Kana yelled back.
“He’s your boyfriend…...not your husband.” Korra yelled. “Besides, it’s not like you’ve never kept secrets from anyone. He will never find out.”
By now Kana has become very irritated at this point and decided to jump out the window to have it out with Korra. She knew that Korra was truly not being herself and was now acting very irresponsible for someone who is supposed to be in charge. As Kana reached Korra she stood right in front of her and stared her down. She immediately crossed her arms and waited for her response.
“Wow, you are a complete badass!” Korra whispered. “Now that I got your attention, did you forget what today is?”
“What are you talking about?” She asked as she looked back at her sister, mildly confused.
“It’s after midnight so that means it’s tomorrow, already. It’s YOUR BIRTHDAY!” Korra cried as she hugged Kana tightly. “Silly girl….so you thought I would be so naive and irresponsible when Leana is counting on me? Your mother planned this whole thing for you weeks ago. We are celebrating your birthday the entire day. Tonight we are going to the town to dance and listen to the street musicians play. We will stay until the sun rises and have a special breakfast there for you. It will be just us girls, all day, until dinner time, then we will join the rest of the family in more festivities and gifts. I know you don’t want anything but we have something very special for you. Your father is going to keep watch overnight so we can go.”
“You little shit! You had me thinking you were doing something irresponsible and that I was gonna hafta beat your ass!” Kana yelled.
“You?…..beat my ass?” Korra asked as she began to laugh. “I train every day while you sit home playing with your baby. You aren’t in any shape to beat my ass little girl.”
“Oh yeah?” Kana asked. “That sounds like a challenge to me there, miss prissy. I’ll have you know, I train every morning while my mother watches Odin. If you think I’m soft then why don’t we have a little contest. A quick spar. Have someone you trust grab a couple cadet swords and practice shields and we'll see just how soft I am.”
“Ooooo, Kana has a bit of an attitude there girls. Alright bitch, you’re on. Let’s go to the sparring grounds and have a little fun. First one down loses.” Korra snapped.
The group left immediately and made their way past the courtyard and onto the sparring grounds. There were several guards standing at their posts, near the entrance but they couldn’t care less about the girls' nightly excursion. The wall torches were lit which gave them an ample amount of light for their nighttime activity. Jana, one of the most trusted sisters went to the armory and procured two cadet swords and a couple wooden shields along with two staves. She threw them on the ground in the middle of the arena while the rest sat in a circle waiting for the battle. They were already cheering and chanting because they knew what they were about to witness was going to be almost surreal. Kana, an elite warrior who has seen many battles, versus Korra who was not only an elite warrior herself but a skilled trainer and mentor to her younger sisters. Both had a great deal of experience fighting but on different sides of the mountain range where each of their respective worlds was unique.
Korra quickly clasped on a pair of leather gauntlets and immediately rushed to the center to grab her sword and shield. Kana was taken a bit by surprise as she was still putting on her wrist guards when Korra came at her. She dodged her attack and rolled to the center grabbing the closest thing she could, which was a long crooked hickory staff. Luckily for her she excelled at using a staff and was able to fend off Korra fairly quickly. She spun around and swung her staff hitting Korra in the back of her leg. She tripped and quickly recovered but realized she may have greatly underestimated her opponent. She stood upright and raised her shield to her chin while pointing her sword at her sister.
“Whoa…..you lot lucky there little girl. I won’t be making that mistake again.” Korra shouted.
“Yes you will…….and that will be your downfall.” Kana shouted back.
“Kiss my ass!” Korra yelled back playfully. “It’s you who is going down”
Korra lunged at Kana, taking a firm swing but Kana blocked it fairly easily. She kneeled down and swung her staff at Korra’s leg again but this time Korra counterattacked and severed Kana’s staff into two pieces. Kana stood up and just looked at the broken weapon and shook her head. She threw the broken pieces just a few paces behind her in case she would need them in a pinch. She dove to the ground, grabbed the other sword and shield then quickly braced herself as Korra immediately went after her. She swung low and hit Kana’s shield, knocking it out of her hand.
“I didn’t need that piece of crap anyway, it will just slow me down.” Kana said as she laughed.
Kana jumped off to Korra’s side and rolled directly behind her. She swung firmly but Korra was able to spin around part way and block the attack. She staggered a bit as Kana went after her again. They exchanged sword swings back and forth for a few minutes but neither could land a hit to knock their opponent down. This proved to Korra that Kana was indeed as good as she was years ago and possibly even better. Korra stood about ten paces away from Kana, panting hard. She chuckled a little as she started circling around her sister.
“You know. I did underestimate you little sister. You’ve got great skills and you hit much harder than I thought. But I’m not giving up until your ass hits the dirt.” She shouted.
“You’d better just sit down now and quit because that isn’t gonna happen anytime soon.” Kana yelled back. “Maybe if you blindfold me and tie my arms behind my back you may have a chance.”
“YOU’RE SUCH AN ASSHOLE!” Korra screamed. “How did you even land Hira? Oh wait I know…..you played a little game of hide the pickle with him the first time you met, didn’t you?”
Kana yelled back. “It was the next night actually and it’s more of a zucchini.”
The onlookers began laughing because they always enjoyed the banter between blood sisters immensely. None of them had taken either side as they wholeheartedly adored and admired them both. Their fight was just a fun, yet violent way of them showing their affections for one another. Besides, it gave each of them the opportunity to show off their skills to the rest of the group. It was more of a stunt than a training session but they all found it very entertaining as well as educational.
“Give it up Korra, you can’t embarrass me or piss me off, if that’s what you're trying to do.” Kana yelled. “And I thought you were an elite warrior. You have kind of a big mouth for a marshmallow.”
Korra was now a bit angry so she ran straight toward Kana and lunged at her. Kana blocked the attack but hit the hilt of her sword against Korra’s shield. Her shield cracked and split in two so she threw the broken pieces down and gripped her sword with two hands. She stepped back a few steps and planted her feet into the dirt firmly. Kana spun back and swung her sword hitting Korra’s causing the handles to get stuck together. They briefly tried to separate them but Kana wasted no time and let go of hers. She quickly kneeled down and caught the falling sword then rolled behind her opponent. She swung her sword upward and knocked the sword out of Korra’s hands. Korra was in complete shock as she knew nothing about any type of move such as that. As she kneeled down to grab her sword Kana kicked the back of her leg, grabbed her arm and took her down. She straddled over Korra and pressed her sword against her neck and smiled.
“Told you, you should have tied my arms up.” Kana said as she laughed.
Kana looked around at the crowd as they were all applauding her immensely. She then looked down at her sister, leaned closer to her and gave her a quick peck on the forehead. She jumped up and tossed the sword over by the armory door then started hugging her friends. Korra sat up and just shook her head as she tried very hard not to smile. Kana reached down then grabbed her hand and pulled her up. She hugged her for a minute then slapped her hard on her butt.
“I have to admit you are tougher than I remember.” Korra said with a great deal of sincerity in her voice.
“Yeah, you are too.” Kana replied. “I thought you had me there for a second when our swords wedged together. If you had quickly dropped your right arm mine would have lowered too far for me to keep my balance and you could have just blown on me and I would have fallen over. Match done, Korra wins!”
“Well, looks like we both learned something tonight.” Korra said happily. “Let’s go drink some wine and dance a bit. Maybe there’s some good food there too cuz I’m really craving zucchini now.”
The girls grouped together arm in arm as they noisily walked down the road and into the village center. The merchants were still on the walkways showing their wares as they pretty much never really closed their shops. The ladies began browsing the merchandise as they often do when they are not busy training. There were a number of jewelers hanging out in the village center and immediately gravitated towards their potential customer. Korra and Kana separated from the group for a brief moment when Korra picked out a beautiful emerald and gold necklace that had flowers and vines wrapped around a solitary stone. She held it up to Kana’s neck and looked at her as a smile formed in her face. She winked at her sister and handed the merchant a few gold pieces. She grabbed Kana’s shoulder, spun her sister around and placed the necklace around her neck. She spun her back around as she noticed tears trickling down Kana’s cheeks. She hugged her and began stroking her hair.
“Happy birthday little sis.” Korra whispered in her sister’s ear.
“Awww. Thank you. You didn’t have to do that. Sparring with you was enough of a gift. Leana would be jealous.” Kana responded.
“What? You mean Leana can’t afford to buy herself a necklace, that freaking cheapskate? Ohhhh, you mean…...the sparring part. Ha, I knew that.” Korra said with a chuckle. “Right…...she’s the Queen. She has more gold and gems than all of us combined.”
“Really?” Kana asked. “She inherited a lot of loot did she? I had no idea. That little rat! She could have told me she was rich. Screw it, I don’t care if she’s jealous now. She’s got riches, a Palace and two babies. I’m really more jealous of her now that I think of it.”
“She actually has a pile of it just for you.” Korra replied. “I bet you didn’t know that either. She has a vault filled for each of us. There are thirty five in all just for the Spirits alone. Who knows what she has for the rest of her family. Probably lots I would guess.”
“Forget the gold, let’s go get some wine and flirt with the guys. Maybe we will find the perfect one for you.” Kana said playfully.
“Uh…….Kana? I don’t know how to tell you this but…..” Korra said as she became very shy suddenly.
“You like girls. Don’t you?” Kana asked softly.
“Well….I like both, but yeah… I mostly like girls. Please don’t tell anyone…..ok?” Korra pleaded.
“I’m a blabbermouth so I can’t promise anything.” Kana replied. “I thought you knew me…...silly girl. Wait! You, Shya and Leana are my only blood sisters right?”
“Uh, yeah why? The rest are from Aquina’s other wives.” Korra said as she looked into her sister’s eyes. “Wait! What are you doing?”
“Getting you a girl.” Kana said as she ran away.
“Get back here!” Korra demanded. “I’m in trouble aren’t I?”
“Yup!” Kana yelled back. “Don’t worry, I found someone who likes bad girls.”
“C’mon…...that’s not fair.” Korra shouted. “WAIT…..IS SHE CUTE?”
Korra ran after her sister and tried to catch up to her but she was much too fast for her. They ran, weaving in between the buildings as the others noticed and tried to follow to see what they were up to. Just as Korra rounded a corner there stood Kana and a beautiful young Sidoan girl. The two were talking while Korra stopped to catch her breath. Kana ran pretty fast but she didn’t seem to be winded at all. Korra was amazed by her speed but also her ability to leave everyone else in the dust.
“How in the world did you run so fast and why aren’t you out of breath?” Korra asked as she bent over and grabbed her knees sucking in air like it was the last bit in the universe.
“This is Celia. She is a friend of Hira.” Kana said softly. “I told her about you and she wanted to meet you. I told her you prefer girls and she well…...you two figure it out.”
“You’re impossible!” Korra exclaimed.
“Have you met you?” Kana asked. “Have fun girls. I’m heading to the pub to get a Meade or something.”
Just as Kana walked past her sister, Korra grabbed her arm and leaned in close to her. She kissed her cheek and gently bumped her head against her sister’s “Thank you so much.” She whispered in her ear. “She is gorgeous. But how did you already know?”
“You talk in your sleep.” Kana whispered back. “Good night sis. I won’t wait up!”
Korra smiled as Kana caught up with the rest and they all headed into the town pub for a refreshing adult beverage. Just as they were out of sight Korra sat down on the bench next to the small pod they were standing in front of and just stared up at the stars. Celia sat next to her and the two began talking. They both were a little shy at first but it took no time before they warmed up to one another. They talked for a while then decided to join the rest out at the tower. They were all standing around at the top stargazing while sipping their chosen beverages. The two joined them as Korra introduced Celia to her family. They all stood under the night sky talking for a while when they noticed the stars were diminishing and the sun was beginning to rise in the distance. Korra seemed shocked that they stayed out that long, but it was her sister’s birthday after all.
The group decided to return to the Palace, so Korra held her new friend one last time, gently caressed her cheek then said goodbye. Celia secretly handed Korra a small figurine, hand carved from a piece of figured walnut. It was a tiny beaver sitting near a tree stump. She explained to her that she once had a shop up in Maple Village and she hand crafted them herself. Korra smiled then grasped Celia’s hand and kissed it gently. They both blushed a little then parted ways for the time being. Korra was slowly heading home but was trailing far behind the rest. Kana noticed and decided to stop for a minute and wait. As Korra reached her younger sister she just smiled and blushed quite noticeably. Kana said not a word as she walked beside her all the way to the Palace gate. She kept looking at her but said nothing.
“Go ahead and ask me you dufus.” Korra shouted. “What do you want to know?”
“Did you kiss her?” Kana asked as she got really excited.
“No!” She replied. “I'm not easy like you are. I did kiss her hand though. After that she gave me this little wooden beaver that she made herself. Isn’t it adorable?”
“Yes! Young love between two girls is adorable.” She replied.
“ I’m talking about the beaver you putz.” Korra said sternly.
“Wait! You touched her beaver? My, who’s the easy one now?” Kana asked.
“I give up!” Korra yelled, then rapidly walked away from her sister.
Kana trailed behind, laughing all the way home. Korra was trying hard to be mad but she just couldn’t hold in the laughter. She turned back and looked at Kana and just shook her head. She stopped for a moment then looked down at the figure in her hand. She covered her eyes then dropped to her knees and just lost it. She began laughing so hard that the others immediately stopped and turned back to check on her. They had no idea what was going on until she held out the figurine. They looked at it and were totally confused at first until Kana explained why she was laughing. They all burst out laughing once they understood the humor. Korra dried her eyes with her neck wrap and stood up to catch her breath. Kana kneeled in front of her with a huge smile on her face.
“So, you never told me how you can run without losing your breath?” Korra asked.
“You invite your new friend to dinner tonight and I’ll tell you all about it.” Kana replied.
“Deal!” Korra responded. “We better get some rest this morning or else we will be grumpy all day.”
“Apparently you never sleep then.” Vera said mockingly.
The entire group began laughing at Korra once again while Kana and the rest hugged Vera firmly. The timing was perfect and Korra had no comeback because she was way too tired to think. She flipped Vera off then dragged herself inside. The rest descended down to their quarters as Kana made her way back to the Queen’s chambers then passed out next to Leana. Everyone looked at her a bit confused as they wondered why she was coming in so late but then Deana remembered what day it was. They decided to wait until she was awake to continue with the celebration since it was her father’s idea to let her stay out all night. Deana glanced at her husband and gave him a dirty look just before covering her daughter with her favorite blanket. Odin was still sound asleep as were the sweet, tiny newborns. It seemed that morning was one of the quietest they’ve had in a very long time. It was a real treat for everyone, especially the new mothers because they all knew this day may be the last for a very long time.
CHAPTER 2: Arga’s Request
“Good morning my Queen.” Deana said as Leana opened her eyes. “Your little ones are awake and I’m betting they are hungry.”
“Could you bring them to me, my sweet little darlings?” Leana asked as she reached out for her babies. “Caden first please. He is more mellow so when he is feeding his sister will too.”
Deana scooped up Caden and kissed him before handing him to his mother. She then scooped up Nora and held her for a minute while Caden latched on. Deana set Nora down and she too immediately began to feed. Leana wrapped her babies up and held them so tight while enjoying the moment. Deana kissed her forehead then stepped away to get her some breakfast.
ot a minute later Tola stormed into the room, pushing a large steel cart. Apparently he beat everyone to the punch and had already raided the kitchen, bringing back a cart full of hot food. There were eggs and turnovers along with fruit and assorted cheeses. He brought the cart straight over to Leana and let her pick first. She selected her items which Deana immediately began feeding her since her arms were full. She thought it was a little silly that she was being fed like a child but she knew there was no other option at this point.
“Open up or you won’t get any desert.” Deana demanded. “Do I have to make silly noises for you to open your mouth and eat, because you know I will.”
“No, that will not be necessary. Just…..just give me a bite already.” She barked at her aunt.
“Geesh…..So bossy for a …...well I guess you are in charge so…...demand away your highness.” Deana replied.
“Actually I left Korra in charge.” She said as she took a mouthful of eggs. “Was that a bad idea?”
“Not at all.” She replied. “I’ll finish up here, then I’ll go check on your mother, ok”
After a few minutes Leana was done eating but her babies were not. Deana cleaned her up and went over to her sister who was in Arga’s care. She sat down on the end of her cot and waited until Arga was done with her checkup. Once Arga left to go check on Leana, Deana moved closer and began playing with Ethan. He was still feeding but she thought that a soft, gentle touch from her would help establish a bond, just in case the need may arise where she had to feed the babies. She began combing his soft hair with her fingernails and he stopped eating for a second as he seemed to be enjoying it.
“Do it again, I want to see if he has the same reaction.” Rayla said excitedly.
Deana combed his soft hair with the tips of her fingernails and again he stopped eating and closed his eyes as if it was soothing to him. Each time she did it he would react the same way. Tola saw it and just sat there smiling. He didn’t dare get up because he was certain Arga would find some sort of problem with him and toss him out again. When Ethan had finished eating, he laid his head across his mother’s chest, just staring at Deana.
“He knows you. Look at that look on his face. He is just so happy to see you.” Rayla cried. “He is precious, I’m so glad I did this. His father is gonna be such a proud papa once he sees his little boy.”
“Has nobody told him yet?” Deana asked. “He must be here to see his son. We gotta find him and bring him in.”
“Hold on a minute. I’m not sure that’s a good idea yet. Ciara may have an issue with him being here seeing that he impregnated her wife. She really doesn’t seem too happy about the idea anymore. I need to talk with her when she’s not too busy.”
“I’ll get her unbusy so she can see you.” Deana replied as she took off to look for Ciara.
Ciara was in the hallway sitting on the floor eating breakfast with Ava and Kayla. They were scrunched together eating blueberries from a solitary gourd. Deana sat in front of them and kissed them all before trying to talk with their mother. The girls knew the adults needed to talk so they finished up then went to find Gemma so they could take her outside to practice archery. Deana sat down and put her arm around Ciara who seemed a little upset.
“What’s wrong girl?” She asked. “You don’t look too happy.”
“I’m just tired.” Ciara replied. “I’ll be fine in a little bit, once I get some rest.”
“Fibber!” Deana said loudly. “You can’t lie to me missy, I can always tell because your eyes give it away. Tell me what’s troubling you.”
“I feel left out sometimes. Not just me but Kayla and Ava too. Rayla has been so obsessed with this baby that she’s nearly forgotten about her other family. I am happy for her but it’s still a little upsetting. I know she has a lot to deal with as Elder, and now a new mother, but she seems to be purposely keeping me at a distance. Did I do something wrong?”
“Not at all. Actually she thinks you are upset with her for trying so hard to have this baby. She didn’t want it to be the most important thing in her life but you know her, once she sets her mind to something she focuses on it completely until it is done. She is not purposely keeping you at a distance, it just feels that way. Believe me, she is upset too! She thinks that you are mad at her for getting pregnant in the first place.”
“Oh no, no, no! I am very happy for her that she became pregnant. I really wanted her to experience childbirth herself since I had already gone through it. I didn’t want her to wait until she was too old to have a child before she decided. She has always been such a good mother to Ava and Kayla but this is all new for her. I could never blame her for what she feels. She wanted to have a child of her own and being married to a woman, that was never going to happen. This was the only way and I am very happy she chose it. I don’t care that she had relations with a man, I am glad she did. I love her so much that I wanted this for her and helped her every step of the way. It has made our marriage that much stronger.”
“I was going to tell her but maybe you should tell her yourself.” Deana explained. “I think I might be able to feed Ethan. My body has adapted and I think I can do it. Do you think I should try?”
“I think that would be an excellent idea but ask your sister first. I’m sure she would agree too if you really can.” Ciara replied excitedly. “Let’s go talk to her.”
The two rushed over to Rayla who was still very tired and sat on either side of her. Ciara looked at her then gently caressed her cheek. Rayla closed her eyes and began to cry hysterically. Deana looked at Ciara then back at Rayla because she was now horribly confused. Was she in pain? Was she that upset? Deana thought. She reached over then quickly snatched Ethan and started to rock him a little to get him to stop crying. She swaddled him and he immediately calmed down but he seemed hungry still. Ciara leaned in and tried to calm her wife down by kissing her cheeks and singing to her softly. It seemed to work as Rayla pressed her dampened cheek against her wife’s. The crying turned into a light sniffle as she just closed her eyes and focused on her wife’s tender voice.
“I’m sorry!.” Ciara whispered. “Are you upset with me for something?”
“No, not at all. I thought you were upset with me for this entire thing.” She cried.
“Don’t be silly. I wanted you to be a mother just as much as you did. This is the best way and it worked out beautifully for you and the baby’s father. I love you so much right now and I am glad you chose the way you did. Having another child is never a bad thing especially when it is for a reason that is truly selfless. You wanted to give a gift to someone who would otherwise never receive one such as this. You are one of the most selfless people I know and you deserve the reward it has given you.” Ciara exclaimed.
“Thank you for everything you have done for me over the years. I love you more than life itself and I truly mean that. We are so lucky to have such a great family. But I have only one question…...where is my baby?” Rayla asked.
“Deana has him and is going to try and feed him if that is ok with you.” She replied.
“Can she do that?” She asked.
“Possibly.” Ciara answered. “With the two of you lactating it’s possible for close female family members to produce milk too. She says she feels like she can and she would know best,”
“That would be such a big help if she could.” Rayla stated.
Ciara looked across the room at Deana who was holding Ethan close to her chest and Deana gave her a thumbs up. She smiled as she pulled Ethan under her tunic and began feeding him. She sat alone in the corner quietly nourishing the sweetest little thing with absolutely no one to bother them. Tola was already outside with Hira planning his trip to the Southern Dulvar Palace to find Shya. Kana was sound asleep as was Leana while Arga was resting on a cot across the room, snoring. It was indeed a lazy day because the day before was nothing less than monumental.
Several hours went by and it was now close to lunch time. Deana was fast asleep, still holding Ethan close to her. Leana had just woken up to the sound of her babies gently crying. Kana woke up too and immediately grabbed the baby closest to her. She too had the same idea as her mother and thought that she too could feed one of the newborns. She swaddled her niece as she began to cry even more due to hunger. It took only a minute or so, but she too was able to feed her, leaving her sister in complete shock. It seems that evolution had a few hidden items up its sleeves which nobody could have ever contemplated if it had not been for their careful planning. Leana was truly amazed and was even a little curious, but above all else she was extremely grateful.
Leana got out of bed and began stretching. She was a little tired but needed to get her body moving so she decided to get dressed and go for a walk down the corridor. She swaddled little Caden and took him on a quick stroll. Just as the door closed loudly behind her a crowd had gathered to see the little prince since he was the first prince born in this Palace in many generations. Everyone was flabbergasted at the sight of the beautiful baby but were also confused by what they witnessed. They were told twins were born but they only saw one. They seemed so worried that maybe one had not survived and they began to panic. But before she could explain, Kana stepped out in the hall behind her with little Nora. She stood next to her sister and carefully opened the baby’s blanket, revealing the tiniest little face any had ever seen. Those in the crowd seemed to immediately become relieved as Kana followed her sister throughout the entire Palace, showing off the newest royal family members. As their Queen had passed by they all bowed down as a sign of respect even though Leana didn’t require it. She was overwhelmed with the love and support she received and she started to become a little emotional. Kana handed Nora to her mother and took the lead as the entire hallway was filled with bowing disciples. Kana stopped, turned towards her sister and she too had bowed down with her people, which made Leana cry that much more.
After such a heartwarming encounter, Kana stood up and slowly led them outside into the courtyard as many devout followers still continued to trail behind. The yard was filled with visitors and Palace inhabitants alike as they were waiting on news from their Queen. Korra and the Spirit team were there too, suited in armor and standing in formation. Today was to be the day where the Queen made her formal visit with the entire Palace in order to reveal their new Prince and Princess. There was to be a brief ceremony acknowledging the children as royalty, followed by a massive celebration. She climbed the steps to her balcony and gave a rather eloquent yet concise speech as Kana stood at her side holding her niece and nephew. The crowd cheered and began chanting in Dulvar to show their love, honor and respect for their new Prince and Princess. Leana and Kana held the babies up for all to witness. She then waved to her subjects then immediately returned to her quarters. Just as the chamber door was closed and locked, Kana swapped babies and started feeding Caden immediately. Leana laughed when she saw how determined her sister was at being helpful and since she has a bit more experience, she just sat down and observed in hopes of actually learning something.
After dinner, Kana decided to visit the Barracks and look for Rayla’s partner, Ezra. He was a tall young lad who was not much older than Rayla herself. He was once Leana’s third in command but is now her General of the Skirmisher battalion. He is dark and handsome wearing stunningly long, braided locks of hair. He is customarily adorned with dark gray dyed leather armor sporting very short sleeves allowing him to display his beautiful stark white tattoos. They are daily reminders of the family he had lost at the hands of Aquina so many years ago. He had the names of his brothers and sisters on one arm and his parents on the other. He is generally shy and soft-spoken in person but during battle, he is a very motivational and gifted leader. He was also the gentleman who was in charge of guarding Rayla when she was in lockdown. It was to him that she had lovingly revealed her nakedness and he had never forgotten about the gentle caring and affections she had shown him. He kept her locked in his heart for several years until she approached him with the special gift she wished to give him. He of course accepted and is now the father to a beautiful baby boy. He, unfortunately, has not met his son yet and Kana was determined to make it her highest priority. She knows how wonderful her own father is and feels that he too needs to be there to hold his own child.
Kana reached the barracks front door and stepped inside the doorway but she was very much unexpected. The soldiers, half-naked and completely surprised, stood at attention then bowed as Kana passed them. She relieved them and told them to carry on as she asked about Ezra. One of the soldiers immediately ran to the lower levels to search for him. There were about twenty or so soldiers on this level in their undergarments behaving, well, like boys. There was banter and mockery along with insults being exchanged regularly. Kana couldn’t help but overhear their quarrels and immediately began laughing to herself. This was her first time visiting the male barracks and it was definitely what she expected. The place was not untidy but cluttered with weapons, gear and empty food shelves which contained only dried up apple cores and orange peels amongst other thrash. Kana stepped further inside as the soldiers immediately began cleaning and reorganizing their quarters out of fear that she would report back her findings to the Queen. She noticed there were a few who were nudging and poking at each other as they seemed to be embarrassed by a woman’s presence. They were either really sweet and bashful or they were just horny, Kana thought to herself as she checked her attire to make sure her lady bits were covered. She stopped walking then stood amongst them just looking to see how they would react. The goofing around seemed to escalate so she decided to raise her voice and scold them for their less than acceptable living conditions. The banter and silliness seemed to stop out of the immense respect they have for her. Not so long ago she was their acting Queen so they still had the memories fresh in their minds of the strength and kindness that she had shown them. One soldier approached her and began speaking while the rest kneeled. He explained how they would all pitch in and clean the place top to bottom for their Queen’s inspection which was long overdue he stated. She agreed and offered to send some Palace groundskeepers to assist in the clean-up as well as prune the orchards which also needed some sprucing.
As they finished talking the soldiers began their clean-up efforts, many still in their undergarments as Ezra entered the room. He stood in the doorway for a second then motioned for Kana to follow him outside into the garden, where he often spends a lot of his time. They sat down and chatted for a while and his eyes suddenly started to well up. He was so excited to see his baby boy that he dropped to his knees and began kissing Kana’s hands repeatedly while his tears saturated his tunic. She took his hand and kindly led him straight to the Queen's chambers.
They stopped at the door as Kana entered alone and sat down to speak with Rayla. They were in there for only a few seconds when Rayla opened the door and jumped into Ezra’s arms. He held her there for a minute when she pulled away briefly to dry her eyes. She took his hand and led him to the bassinet where little Ethan was quietly sleeping. She picked him up and gently handed him to his very nervous father. Ezra just stared at his son and cried even more which made everyone in the room cry too. They knew how much it meant to him and to all of the Dulvar who have lived childless for such a long time. He held his baby close while kissing his tiny nose and forehead repeatedly. Rayla led him to a comfortable chair so that he could get comfortable and prepare to spend a lot of time with him. They just sat there quietly as Ezra couldn’t take his eyes off the little miracle he called his son. Rayla pulled up a chair and sat next to the two and held onto Ezra’s arm tightly. Ava sat at Rayla’s feet as she brushed her hair ever so delicately with her fingernails. Kayla wanted the same treatment so she sat down next to her sister and pressed her head against hers. The five of them sat there calmly as Ezra held his little boy so close to his own heart. As Rayla finished brushing the girls’ hair, she asked that they find something to eat for their new guest. He just smiled then closed his eyes and focused on every little noise his son made.
“How are you feeling?” She asked the father of her child.
“Like a KING!” He said excitedly.
“I am so happy to hear you say that.” She replied. “As far as I’m concerned, that is what you are. You are the King of your own little kingdom. You are loved and admired by all who follow you. Your brothers all look up to you and I can see why. I am so just happy that I could do this for you, actually for us. Family is so important and having a child makes it even more so. I can see now why my wife was so eager to help us. She knew how we would feel once we truly became parents. There is no feeling like it in this world. Not even eradicating evil compares to the love one has for a child. You were kind to me when I needed it the most. You did not judge me “I know…I know that you could never become my wife…because you are spoken for, but I would like your blessing to take another to be mine.” Ezra said softly.
“My friend…you will always have my blessing. Please go find someone with whom you can connect and share your life. I will always love you but do not hold yourself back from being happy. There are a lot of women who would be happy to call you their husbands. Please do not hesitate. Your son will always need you and you may see him any time you wish.”
“Thank you, Elder Rayla.” Ezra said as he smiled. “You will always hold a place in my heart as the one person who truly cared for me enough to give me the best gift anyone could ever receive. I hope one day I can find another like you. If I do, that would make me the luckiest man in existence.”
“Thank you.” She cried. “That means so much to me. More than you’ll ever know.”
“Can I stay a little longer?” He asked.
“Of course, you can.” She said excitedly. “The Queen will eventually want her room back but for now stay with your son. He is very little so he cannot leave the Palace but feel free to come to see him anytime. He needs to learn your voice if he is to ever live with you.”
“He can live with me someday?” He asked as he genuinely seemed shocked.
“Of course!” She replied as she brushed his cheek with her fingertips. “A boy needs his father, always. He will live with me in the Forest Village and if you wish, your Queen has already given you her permission to come to live there with us.”
“If what you say is true then I will go back with you.” He said with great joy. “But I am a soldier. Is there a place for me in your battalion?”
“You will be my first in command.” She cried. “I will see to it. You have great leadership skills and you will have a hundred at your command. Some Brevian and some Dulvar. You will be welcome to join us if you wish. But do not fear if you wish to stay here. We will visit often and your Queen will bring you with her every time she visits us. I promise you, you will never need to worry about him in your absence. He will have the best family here and there.”
“Thank you.” He said as he leaned over and kissed his son. “He is so small now that he must not leave his mother’s side, but one day perhaps I will take him on a quest or a wonderful adventure in search of our lost people.”
“That would be wonderful.” She said with a smile. “But until then come and hold him anytime you like.”
She laid her head on his shoulder and wrapped her arm around the both of them. Ciara saw them together and smiled. She didn’t interrupt their precious moment, instead, she pulled the cart over to them and handed them two, some tasty morsels before darting back over to the Queen. Rayla laughed a little then gathered a few things for Ezra to quietly munch on as he held his sleeping boy close to him. They were a quaint little family within their ever-growing world. Ten years ago Rayla never would have thought she would be anything but a free-spirited Warrior who fought off enemies along with her unwanted suitors. She never thought she would have chosen a baby rattle over a sword or a soft baby blanket over an elegantly crafted suit of armor. She sat close to her friend and thought hard about how her life has changed so dramatically. She knew that day, that her hard work as Elder had finally paid off and that it may be time for her to focus on being a mother instead of a leader. At that very moment, she decided to resign as Elder of the Forest Village and hand the title to her trusting sister Deana.
“Ciara. Ciara…can you come and talk with me for a minute?” She asked quietly.
“What is it, my love?” She whispered softly as she tiptoed over to her trying to not wake Ethan or Ezra who were both fast asleep. She kneeled at her wife’s side and rested her chin on her shoulder while caressing her arm.
“I need to tell you something.” She said softly. “But I need you to stay calm. Ok?”
“Oh….if you tell me to stay calm I probably won’t. I’ll do my best.” She replied.
“I decided to resign.” She whispered in her wife’s ear. “I no longer wish to be Elder and will gladly hand the title to my sister. Please don’t ask me to reconsider or try to change my mind. I thought about this for a long time now and my mind is made up.”
“That’s ok because I was hoping you would tell me that one day.” Ciara said as she kissed her wife’s cheek. “I am going to miss the waterfall inside our living room but I’d give it all up to spend more time with you.”
Rayla looked over at Ciara as if she had fallen in love with her all over again. She said not a single word as she grabbed her and gave her a warm passionate kiss. “I couldn’t have fallen in love with a better person. You are my world and now I see where my future is heading. I am not a leader or a warrior but the wife of the most wonderful person in the world. Going forward I will take our children’s hands firmly and stand behind you. We are now your pillar and you, our monument. Your work is far greater than mine and it’s about time I acknowledged that. Our children need me because there are so many who need you. I don’t need to hold our people’s hands any longer. I need to take the hands of those children who rely on me, not adults who refuse to take charge of their own lives. Deana can take the helm now and I will be her advisor.”
“Do you wish for me to go get her so you can tell her of your decision?” Ciara asked.
“No. That won’t be necessary.” She said as she closed her eyes. “She’s right behind you.”
“What do you mean you are resigning?” Deana asked as she kneeled down next to Ciara. “I thought we talked about this? You were so excited to finally be back home and working with our own people. You have such a great rapport with all those families. They all look up to you. Why give that up?”
“Look to your right.” She said, “I have a son now. I cannot be a good mother to him if I’m spending all of my time with adults who refuse to take care of themselves. I love them but…I love him more.”
“I see.” Diana answered softly. “I……I…..will accept your decision but promise me you will be by my side if I ever need your advice!”
“Oh, little sister…of course, I will always be by your side. How else am I going to smack your ass when you screw up?” She asked with a chuckle.
“Ha…ha…freaking…ha!” Deana barked at her sister. “Apparently, Tola is the only funny one in the family.” She then kissed her sister and darted off to find her family so she could tell them the news.
“I think you’re funny.” Ciara said softly.
Several hours had gone by and it was now dinner time. Tola had arrived with yet another cart filled with soups, salads, rolls, fruit, and a few pints of his favorite Meade. He woke up those who were still sleeping and began tossing hot plates onto their laps. Deana entered with Gemma by her side carrying pots of sweet tea. The entire family sat at the round table and enjoyed their meal together, Ezra included. He sat to the left of Rayla so that he could be close to his son. Ciara sat on her right and fed her as she fed Ethan. It was one big happy, noisy family and they cherished every minute of it. Soon they would part ways and continue on with their daily duties but for now their only job was to be together. Tola lifted up his glass and held a toast to the newest family members and to his ever-growing family. Just as they sat down to eat, Arga started to cry intensely.
“What is it, my sister?” Leana asked.
“I am so happy to be a part of your family but we are missing someone we truly love.” She cried. “Shya is much like a daughter to me and it breaks my heart knowing she is out there all alone while we are here together. I cannot eat until I know she is safe.” Arga pushed her meal aside and placed her head in her hands. The room went completely quiet for a moment as everyone else decided they too would not eat tonight either.
“Arga…….you are absolutely right.” Tola cried as he stood up and poured his beer into the sink. “I will only eat to keep up my strength so that I can go out and find our sister. I will not enjoy anything else until she is safely home.” With that, he finished his soup then left the room.
“I agree with my brother. I will not waste another minute here while our own could be lost.” Hira stood up and addressed the table. “I’m leaving immediately to go find her. Whoever else wishes to join me, I will be at the stables preparing.” Hira kissed Kana and Odin then without delay rushed out the door to catch up to his brother.
Arga looked around the table then stood up and tightened her gauntlets. “Ciara, I do not wish to leave you by yourself to care for everyone, so if you wish for me to stay…I will. “
“We got this.” Ciara said firmly. “You go with them and bring Shya back. You are as strong as you are wise and they will be much stronger with you by their side. Go! Do not worry about us. Kana and Kayla have learned so much from us and will do well to assist me.”
Without saying another word, Arga bowed to her Queen then abruptly left. Ezra looked over to his Queen hoping she would give him the order to go with them but she shook her head.
“My Queen…I cannot sit here while they risk their lives in unknown territories. Many of my troops have been to the Southern Dulvar Palace and can guide them safely across the great chasm and past the poisonous jungle.” Ezra stated. “Please allow us to help them.”
“I know deep in my heart that you will probably find a reason to leave if I order you to stay. That’s because you follow your heart instead of what is spoken to you.” Leana stated, as she looked directly at her soldier. “And since I cannot find any reason for you to not follow your heart I will give you only one order. Do what your heart tells you. That is my one true order.”
Ezra stood up, kissed Rayla on the cheek, then his beloved son on the forehead before walking over to his Queen. He kneeled at Leana’s side then bowed. He kissed her hand then rested his cheek on her knuckle for a moment. He looked up at her as she smiled then nodded to him. He nodded back then rushed out the door and straight to the barracks to command his battalion. The ladies finished eating and cleaned up the chambers mostly in silence. They felt horrible that they became so wrapped up in their own lives that they nearly forgot about their lost sister. Kana kept looking at her mother hoping she would tell her to go with her father and Deana could sense it. She looked out the window and watched as the men she loved so dearly, geared up. She felt like she needed to do more but she knew she had a great responsibility to her son. She was now a mother first and warrior second and that order could never change for her. She knew her own actions had molded her new life but she also knew that her sister was a great part of it. She turned away from the window for a moment and her mother was standing there directly behind her holding Odin.
“He is little now and knows very little of what life is about. He loves his mother unconditionally but he loves the rest of his family too.” Deana stated. “I would rather tell him one day how his mother is the strongest woman I know because she follows her heart than explain to him how we lost her wonderful aunt because we were afraid to let go of our own selves.”
“Are you telling me to go?” Kana asked.
“I’m telling you to search deep into your heart and find that amazing girl who was strong enough to reach out to her enemy and take her hand as an ally.” Deana cried. She stepped up to her daughter and kissed her cheek. She then opened the shutters and stepped back while little Odin sat there chewing on his favorite cookie. Kana kissed her mother and son then stood at the window sill peering out at the sunset.
“I’ll be back as soon as I can.” She said just before jumping out of the window and darting straight to the armory. Her mother laughed and cried at the same time as Odin just stared at her with a confused look.
“Your mother is the strongest woman I know. I am so proud of her and I know you are too.” She said to little Odin as she closed the shutters and placed him on the floor with his toys. She looked at the others who were standing there silently.
Ava and Kayla sat next to her and began playing with her and Odin. Rayla and Leana quietly tended to their precious newborns but they too were sad knowing they too had a decision to make. They both had just as much to lose as Kana but they also knew that they had more to gain by staying. They had precious little lives that they hardly knew and these first days or even weeks are the most important.
“You idiots better not even think of leaving me with your babies and joining them.” Deana yelled towards her sister and her niece. They turned around and laughed because she knew exactly what they were thinking. “I mean it! I only have two breasts and they are bone dry right now. I can’t feed three hungry babies so you better sweep every other thought out of your mind and focus on them. Do you hear me?”
“See…Leana… I told you she would make a great Elder.” Said Rayla. “She even has the bitchy attitude to go with her fluent sarcasm. Oh Elder Deana can you help me with my potato plants….they don’t seem to want to grow!”
“How about I bury you headfirst and shove the potato plants up your ass. I’ll bet they’ll grow then.” Leana replied while poking fun at her Aunt.
The three began laughing hysterically as Deana began rolling on the floor nearly crying. Ava and Kayla couldn’t help but laugh too as they all imagined Deana sitting on her throne with a sweet roll in one hand and a maple beer in the other yelling profanities at her subordinates who piss her off on a daily basis. The more they imagined the more they continued laughing. Deana had to rush over to the window to get some fresh air because she could hardly breathe from the laughter and the tears.
After a few minutes, Korra knocked on the Queen’s door as she heard all the commotion from out in the hall. She didn’t actually wait for a response as she barged through the door and looked around the room. She was a bit perplexed as they were still laughing and neither of them could say a word to explain to her why. She just chuckled a bit then stormed out the door and headed to the armory to talk with her sister. When she reached the front door Kana was exiting with a couple sets of armor, swords, shields, and chain mail. Korra looked at her and stopped right in front of her.
“I’m going with you.” She said as she grabbed some of the armor pieces.
“That’s why I have two sets of everything. I wouldn’t dream of going to find our sister without you.” Kana cried. “Red or black?”
“What? Red I guess.” She replied.
“Red it is then.” Kana said as she handed Korra a beautiful hand-crafted sword from the scabbard on her back. “The red-handled sword was Bo’s and always kept it on the stand just below mine. You’ll wield it proudly, I know.”
“Why did you give me the choice then knowing it belonged to your husband?” Korra asked as she started to choke up a little.
“Because his spirit is within us all and he was proud to call you his sister.” She answered as she handed her the scabbard from her back. “Besides, I was able to hold him, so why can’t you?”
They finished gathering their provisions and immediately brought them over to the stable where the stable hand had already watered, fed, and saddled their beloved steeds. Kana filled her packs then mounted her horse. She left the stable and quickly met up with Hira and her father who were surprised to see her. She pulled up next to Hira and tightened his cuirass in the back. She straightened his helmet then did the same for her father without saying a word.
“I’m betting I cannot convince you to stay behind this time, can I?” Tola asked.
“You are smarter than you look.” She replied then with a serious face looked over at Korra who was struggling with her gauntlet. She reached over and fixed her up then the two trotted over to Ezra and Arga who were looking at an old Dulvar map from her collection.
“Uhhh….she is pretty serious right now isn’t she?” Hira asked.
“Yeah. Keep your distance for a while.” He said sternly. “She could accidentally hurt you without even batting an eye. Those Dulvar Spirits seem to have an on and off mechanism in their head. OFF, and they are like us, sweet and caring but in the ON position they are a whole other being. They become much more focused and are prone to spontaneous outbursts. Most are precise and coordinated but usually violent. She loves you but she pushes her emotions deep down inside her armored shell. If she shows no emotion towards you or anyone else, do not take it personally. I’ll never truly understand Spirits but Elite Spirits exist in another realm when they are fighting. Learn their attacks and their patterns and you will be able to fight alongside them. If not, stay out of their way.”
“Understood!” Hira replied.
Moments later the horns blew several times and the lowest level gates opened. With great speed and precision thirty Elite Spirits, all covered in the blackest armor on horseback emerged carrying long staves and banners displaying the sign of the Dulvar Palace. They lined up next to Ezra and immediately began chanting. The horns blew again and the eastern gate opened. Nearly fifty Dulvar Skirmishers clad also in dark black armor charged on horseback falling in next to the Spirits. They too began chanting as they raised their pikes and spears ready to ride. Tola came around the front next to Ezra and stopped.
“This is pretty impressive my friend.” He said happily. “You lead, I’ll follow.”
“Affirmative.” Replied Ezra. “Are your friends ready?”
“Yes.” Hira shouted from the back of the battalion.
Arga pointed her pike toward the sunset and the battalion charged onward towards the Solemn Forest. Tola waited for a moment until the battalion cleared the gates then closed the portico himself. He and Hira trailed just a few paces behind following their leaders into the night. No one was sure how long their quest would take nor how far it would take them. The only thing they knew is that their beloved sister was the only thing that mattered now. It was strange though to Tola because it was usually him who was leading and now he was at the mercy of a person he’d only recently got to know. He still hadn’t had the time to wrap his heart around the fact that he had just learned of his mother and long-lost brother not very many moons ago. Of course, he trusted his gut then, so he must continue to do the same now. Shya’s life may depend on it.
CHAPTER 3: Confrontation Several days had gone by and the battalion had already stopped by the Forest Village for rest and to restock provisions before they continued on past the Solemn Forest. They were now well past any place Tola had ever adventured to and everyone could tell he was a bit uneasy about it. They passed the Great Southern Swamps and had already reached the southernmost part of the Great Chasm. The battalion stopped to take a break and water the horses while several Skirmishers scouted ahead to check the condition of the bridge. Hira had dismounted and located a nice tall tree to climb. As he reached the top he took out his looking glass and began scanning the ridge.
“What can you see?” Tola asked.
“Not much I’m afraid.” He replied. “The steam and smoke from the lava flowing is obscuring the other side of the chasm. All I know is that if we all travel in single file we would only cover about one quarter of the bridge’s length. It’s massive.”
“All eighty three of us?” Tola asked. “How can that chasm be so wide?”
“More importantly, how did someone actually build a bridge to span that distance?” Hira asked.
The two decided to speak with Arga and Ezra to find out what their immediate plan was. As they approached they could hear yelling and what sounded like metal scraping against metal. They were now worried that their two leaders were fighting amongst themselves. When they finally reached the front of the line they were indeed correct as Arga and Ezra were engaged in battle. After several sword hits Arga had Ezra pinned down with a blade pressed against his throat. Tola immediately jumped onto her and tried to separate the two so they could find out what the argument was about. As Tola grabbed Arga’s arm she threw him off of her and immediately attacked him. Hira jumped in to defend his brother but she engaged him too. A battle ensued for several minutes when Tola was able to disarm her and with Hira’s help pinned her to the ground.
“STOP FIGHTING US ARGA!” Tola screamed. “WE ARE NOT YOUR ENEMY!”
After a few minutes of flailing wildly, Arga had passed out. Hira checked her breathing but it was shallow and her heart was racing. “She might have been poisoned!” He shouted. “Is anyone else experiencing extreme thirst, dizziness and extreme irritability? Come forward if you are.”
They all looked around at one another but no one stepped forward. They all seemed to be fine, it was only Arga who seemed sick. Ezra dusted himself off and grabbed his weapons. He was slightly injured but he quickly had a fellow Skirmisher bandage him up. The Spirits stood by practically motionless and did absolutely nothing to intervene. It was as if they knew something like this would happen and decided it wasn’t their place to interfere. Tola looked at Korra who quietly sat on her horse. She had a blank expression on her face as if she didn’t care if they had died.
“Why didn’t you intervene, Korra?” Tola asked bluntly.
“Because I would have killed her without even feeling bad about it.” She replied coldly. “We are already at the chasm and if she is poisoned then she will be more of a burden to us than an asset. I figured Ezra could either help her or end her as the rest of us continued on.”
“She is our family. Have you no love for your family?” Hira cried. “She loves us all like we are her own children. Do you want her to die?”
“No… but Queen Leana’s orders are to find and rescue Shya at all costs.” She said firmly. “Our orders are clear. She is here to assist us in finding the Southern Dulvar Palace. If she cannot then we will not rely on her. We are crossing the bridge in the morning. Besides, the winds have picked up and we stand less of a chance of surviving the undulating bridge. It’s not very stable and may collapse if there is too much weight. We are camping here for the night.
Tola realized it was no use talking to the Spirits when they are mentally bonded. They move as one, act as one and think as one when connected. Tola grabbed Hira by the arm and pulled him away from the group. As they found a spot to unpack their gear Tola began whispering to him.
“When the sun sets we will sneak past the Spirits and cross the bridge together.” He said quietly. “I trust Korra to fight with us but I don’t trust her to protect us. We need to scout ahead and find the Secluded Village. You have a map of that area don’t you?”
“Yes, but there are numerous raider camps between here and there.” Hira whispered. “We must find a way around them. Actually…I already know a way.”
“Enlighten me!” Tola cried.
“Your sister knows how to tree-skip doesn’t she?” Hira asked. “I have enough rope and a powerful crossbow to get us across the treetops!”
“You’ve been hanging around with Kana too long!” Tola said mockingly. “There’s no way I’m climbing those trees. They are taller than the freaking Palace itself.”
“Well then do you have a better idea?” He asked. “Kana is part of them now, she won’t and probably can’t break away from the battalion. She is well protected in her group and will be safer with them. This is the only way and you know it.”
“You are probably right. Damn you for being so much like my daughter.” Tola said with a chuckle. “But I do trust her, so I will also trust you.”
“Thank you.” Hira replied as he slapped his brother on the shoulder. “Let’s eat, then work our way up the mountain and take the bridge from the south. They will never see us even with a looking glass. The smoke will camouflage us but we better run for it or the heat kills us.”
The two sat down and built a small campfire far away from the rest of the battalion. Kana stayed close to her team and never once checked in on her father or her boyfriend. It seemed to bother Hira but tried hard to remember it’s not her but the power of the Superus that keeps them apart. It’s mysterious power baffles even the smartest scholars of the Dulvar Palace. Perhaps it was indeed a power that is not meant to be understood but only felt and accepted rather than reasoned with. Hira has studied Dulvar and Sidoan teachings but he still can’t grasp the concept completely. Without ever having been chosen as a host for the Superus or any of its fractals, he was at a great disadvantage in learning any more about it. He laid his head down and rested for a while as he waited for the sun to set. Tola did the same and now seemed more confident with his brother’s plan than he was earlier. He still wasn’t too keen on climbing but he was determined to find Shya and a little fear of heights wasn’t going to stop him.
As night fell on the camp, Tola woke up to find that Hira was missing. His horse was still tied up and his things were strewn about as if their camp was raided. As Tola sat up Ezra was just behind him with the entire battalion at his back with weapons drawn. He looked around for his brother but she couldn’t see much of anything except the Dulvar torches and shining swords pointed directly at him.
“What is going on?” He asked. “Where is Hira?”
“Were you planning on leaving tonight to cross the chasm without us?” Ezra asked.
“What are you talking about?” He asked. “Where is my brother?”
“Answer the question or you will be tossed off the ridge along with your brother and that crippled wash up.” Ezra demanded. “ I will not ask you again.”
“Yes. We were going to scout ahead and find a way to the Secluded Village without engaging the raiders.” Tola answered.
“That is why the Queen sent the Spirits along. They can hide themselves amongst the trees and eliminate the resistance before we set foot on the other side. They are already across and are clearing the way for us as we speak. Before you decide to change our plans, maybe you should speak with me first.” Ezra said firmly.
“Screw you! I’m not one of your soldiers. I don’t care if my sister cares about you. If you ever threaten me again I will personally see to it that you never return to my village.” Tola yelled.
Without provocation Ezra lowered his visor and immediately attacked Tola. He lunged at him with great force and knocked him down the mountainside. He tumbled nearly fifty paces down the side and stopped as he hit a large pile of brush. He jumped up and immediately began looking for his weapon only to find broken tree branches. Ezra slid down the mountain and engaged Tola again. He hit Tola’s armor several times causing it to break into pieces leaving his entire chest area vulnerable. Tola rolled around on the ground then kicked Ezra’s feet, knocking him down. Tola grabbed a handful of thorns and began hitting Ezra in the face until he was covered, compromising his vision somewhat. As Ezra began clearing the thorn branches that were stuck to his face, Tola ran back up the mountain and continued looking for his brother. He snuck around the entire group of Skirmishers who were now all searching for him. As he carefully slipped away he could hear a faint cry in the distance that sounded like Arga. He couldn’t see anything but followed his ears and the voices he kept hearing. As he closed in on the sound he found Hira and Arga bound to a tree with ties around their mouths. He untied Arga first as she was yelling through her gag.
“Tola……do….not….fight. He is….p….p….poisoned. He….d….du…..does not know….w…w….w….what he is……d….doing.” Arga stuttered.
“Are you going to be alright?” He asked Arga.
“Ye……ye…..yessss.!” She replied as she was shivering intensely.
He immediately untied his brother and helped the two over to their horses. Unfortunately the Skirmishers located them and immediately began their pursuit. Tola let Hira take the lead as he darted down the mountain and up to the bridge. He quickly trotted across the wooden planks hoping there were broken ones because if there were he and his brother would both be wishing they had wings instead of gills.
Tola and Arga were right at his heels as they quickly dashed across the rickety bridge. The heat from the lava below began burning their hair and scorching their gills almost immediately. They knew that their best bet would be to cross as fast as their horses would run and jump into the wooded area to hide. The three pressed on as fast as their horses would run, over the rickety bridge. They could smell burning wood mixed with brimstone as they tried hard not to focus on their quickly drying neck wraps. Tola reached around back and took out one of his bota bags then doused his face and neck. He tossed it over to Hira who was now barely conscious. Hira couldn’t muster the energy to grab the bag so Tola quickly jumped over to his brother’s horse. He tore the top of the bag off with his teeth then doused his brother’s face and neck. His horse tripped behind them then collapsed in the middle of the planks. The strong arid winds quickly tossed his body down into the chasm below, but there was nothing that anyone could do.
As they finally reached the other side the bridge collapsed and plummeted down into the fiery chasm, exploding into a wall of flames. They jumped off their horse and dropped to the grass trying hard to find some moisture in the vegetation or even the soil. Tola dug deep into the ground but only came up with heaps of dry sand. Arga jumped off her horse and poured the last of her water onto the necks of her companions. She tore off a piece of her sleeve and fashioned neck wraps for them before sprinkling every last drop from her bag onto the fabric. The two almost immediately began breathing a bit easier but they knew sitting there would inevitably mean their demise. Arga tossed them back on their horse and led them down the winding path through the desert area just ahead of them.
“Look in the distance my friends…there are trees and lots of them. We just need to make it there and we will have a much better chance of survival.” Arga cried.
It didn’t take long to reach the tree line but as Arga looked at her companions, they were completely unconscious. She took their horse’s reins and dragged them to the first watering hole she could locate. The water was quite murky but she was desperate to save their lives. She towed the horse to the water and it immediately shoved its face deep into the muck. Her horse did the same as she dismounted and approached her friends. With a quick shove, she pushed both of them into the water, head first. She wasted no time in crafting a water filter from her other sleeve and immediately began filling all of their bags. She waited a few minutes to see if they would eventually wake but was so nervous that they may not. She had just acquired this new family and she wasn’t about to lose them now. She reached into the pool and began feeling for any body part she could reach. She started to panic thinking the muck had filled their gills and they both suffocated to death. She started crying intensely when a hand gripped her arm tightly. She pulled as hard as she could and soon found Tola crawling out onto the grass, coughing.
“Where is Hira?” She cried anxiously. “I’ve killed him, haven’t I?”
“I… hope… not!” Tola replied in between coughs. “If Kana loses…him…she’s gonna… kill all of…us!”
“If he dies……..then I will throw myself into the chasm.” She replied.
“I’ll help you search….jus….” Tola stuttered.
Suddenly a hand reached out and grabbed his ankle. Tola reached over and locked his hand firmly against Hira’s wrist and pulled with everything he had. Arga grabbed Hira’s forearm and with great strength pulled him straight out onto the grass. The two fell over as Hira landed at their feet and began coughing profusely. After a few minutes he was able to clear his mouth and throat to say a few words.
“EAT…..SHIT…..ARGA!” He Yelled, then dropped to the ground laughing.
She laughed only a little because was so scared that she lost them. She took a deep breath and sighed because she was so elated that he could even speak. “I think you’ve eaten enough for both of us my friend.” She replied. “I’m just so happy you are alive to tell me so.”
“FOR NOW!” He shouted back. “I’m keeping far away from you!”
“Fair enough.” She replied. “Tola, are you alright, my friend?”
“With friends like you…who needs enemies?” Tola said softly.
“I heard that, Mister!” She yelled. “As a matter of fact…we were once great enemies, you, I and mister potty mouth here. Dulvar and Sidoans fought more than lions and hyenas. I killed more Sidoans than there are sands on the shore. I was a great warrior and I never faltered in my duties or in battle. I followed my orders proudly and felt no remorse for what I did or those I’ve destroyed. Your lives could have been so very different if we had the courage then, to take one another’s hands like you and Kana did. I now regret…my…entire…past. I feel such shame in the things I have done. I do not deserve to be here by your side, as part of your family. I carry the dead souls of those I vanquished on my undying corpse. I am even lower than dirt and do not deserve to breathe the same air as you. Please my brother…..leave me here and continue on to find your sister. I will remain here defending your honor until my breath leaves me and my soul burns in the fires of the great chasm.”
“I forgive you…Arga.” Hira said softly. “You no longer carry the souls of those you have slain. Your hands are clean and pure and do not contain a single drop of our blood on them. Those souls now dwell deep within the realm of the Superus and one day yours will too. But until then, get up…..take your sword and stand by our side as our beloved sister. We love you and trust you with our lives. If you were no better than the scum that clings to the bottom of the muck at your feet, then why would we still treat you as our equal? You are more valuable than the world's brightest gems and the world’s purest gold. Your past is indeed unchangeable and your future unseeable. Only today, can you make a real difference. Take today as a gift.”
Arga dropped to her knees and began breathing very deeply and slowly as the words he spoke sifted into her mind. She said not a word nor shed a tear as she stared at the dirty water that was now playing gently, splashing tiny droplets onto her knees. As the water calmed she could see her reflection on the surface. She did not like the face she saw but knew it was the only one she had. She couldn’t change what she saw, only the way she looked at it. Tola kneeled next to her as did Hira and their faces overshadowed her pain while reflecting a new light on her former self. She looked deep into her eyes and saw the good that they had seen in her all along. She was not proud of her former image but was proud of her brothers who lovingly painted a brand new portrait of her. To her it was a masterpiece that portrayed everything they held closest to their heart. She once looked at herself as vile and hated but that old mask was now dissolved in the very water she once cast away.
Arga stood up then turned to face her brothers. She looked at their strong and confident faces then gently placed her hands on each of their shoulders. She bowed her head and began humming ever so softly. Her vibrating vocal chords began resonating through her entire body and then to the very flesh of her companions. They stood very still as a feeling of tranquility and peace flowed through them. When the vibrations stopped they looked up and saw a warm smile on Arga’s lips. At that moment she had finally found the inner peace she sought after her entire life. As her hands slipped from their shoulders and dropped down, so did her body. She fell into the water head first as the two watched her disappear into the murkiness. They tried to grasp her legs before she went under but their hands slipped as if their grips were as fragile as rose petals. They couldn’t hold on and she slipped away under the surface,
“I can’t find her…….why couldn’t I hold onto her. Why?” Hira yelled.
“I couldn’t either. I can’t understand it. My fingers gripped her ankles but my hand failed me. I was powerless to hold even the last part of our sister I could grasp. She saved us…..how could we not save her? We lost her!” Tola cried.
“Do not be upset, my children.” A voice whispered from the water.” She may no longer be with you but she is far from lost. Her body will purify the soil and cleanse the very water droplets you breathe. Her soul will become part of us and will now make us even more complete. As we become unified again…..we will have the strength to purify the entire conglomeration of particles you press your toes into. This planet will become a paradise for all its remaining inhabitants. It is because of you….that we can do these things. You once looked at us as the enemy but we can neither be foe, nor friend. We are just as we are…..a reflection of you. We are powerless without you and you will die without us. Now do you understand….young Tola?”
“Understand what?” He asked harshly. “How can I understand what you are or what you do? You help us one day and mock us the next. How can we truly trust you? How?”
“Only you can answer that.” The voice said as the water rippled with every spoken word. “Call upon us once you have discovered the answer. Only then we will reveal ourselves to your kind.”
“Bullshit!” Tola yelled. “You are cowards hiding behind the elements of this world, afraid of your own reflections. We are you! We are the reflections of you and you do not like what you see. Admit it! You made us into the killing machines you sought not to create. Our ancestors built weapons that scorched every grain of dirt they called home. You then washed away the last remnants of them and created a whole new breed of monster but nowyou lost control of it again. You cannot control life. You can alter it or even change it, but it goes on without you. And that’s what scares you. You know we don’t need you, but you’ll die without us.”
“So then why haven’t you cast us away like you do a dead corpse?” The voice asked. “If you know these things then why seek us for guidance?”
“Because we thought that we all want the same thing....unity.” Hira replied softly. “We don’t want to merely exist or survive…..we wish to thrive. We wish for all races and all species to live in harmony together. We want to unify everything that exists in our world. We do not want dissent or segregation. We cannot thrive knowing there are others out in this world suffering. We want to bring all lives into a realm of complete harmony. The animals themselves have trusted us and relied on us for centuries. Now that the Dulvar and many of the Sidoan do also, maybe soon we won’t need to raise a sword or a shield against anyone. I would love nothing more than to melt down my weapon and use the metal to create a beautiful sculpture of my family. I wish to use my open hand to warmly grasp the hand of a loved one not to grip a frigid piece of metal to hurt another. We believe that you can help us more than you have. We just don’t understand why you hold back and cower away from us.”
“You said it yourself….we have no control over you and you do not need us to survive. You look at us as a mere parasite that you have no need for.” The voice said more sternly. “You have the power to change your world and your own destiny so why not destroy that of which you have no need?”
“We may not need you but that doesn’t mean we deny your need to survive.” Tola replied. “You are here amongst us and we do not desire your exodus or even your demise. If you truly need us then we will do everything we can to meet your needs. You have shown us that you are mostly peaceful by nature and that you can help us if you so wish. But you know for a fact that we have done more for ourselves to guarantee our survival in this world than you have. How can we trust a being that only helps when there is something for them to gain? When was the last time you made any type of sacrifice?”
The water remained still and the voice, quiet. Tola looked around him to see if there was any change in their surroundings that would indicate the Superus’ departure but he saw nothing. Was it still there and thinking of its answer or did it disappear without a trace. Hira looked at his brother and briefly shook his head. He was indeed convinced that the Superus had no answer and may never return to speak with them. They both decided that they weren’t waiting any longer and were pressing on to find the Secluded Village. According to Hira’s map it wasn’t far but the existence of raider camps could prove to be a major problem. They decided it was best to take the high route along the treetops and hope they do not possess the same knowledge or technology to follow or intercept.
Tola gathered as much of the clean water that he could fill their bota bags with. He then took his brothers and his neck wraps and dragged them across the water’s surface. Without wringing them out they tied them around their necks and mounted their solitary steed. They quickly trotted down the dirt path until they reached the densest part of the woods they could find. Hira took to the treetops and began scanning for the valley where the Secluded Village could be found. He took out his map but it disintegrated in his hands due to the acidity of the water they were tossed into. He then resorted to his memory and began looking for the large crescent shape of the lowest mountain ridge, but could not find it yet. Without a map to guide them to the Southern Dulvar Palace nor a bridge to span the burning chasm allowing them to return home, they were feeling utterly defeated.
“Brother…I’m afraid I don’t know where to find the village or the Palace.” Hira said as he sighed. “And with no bridge….I don’t know what to do.”
“Since when?” Tola shouted. “You knew how to find me. You knew how to find Aquina and end the suffering of our people. You even managed to win the heart of a grieving widow….how can you say you don’t know what to do?”
“It’s easy….it’s called a LANGUAGE. You know the things you say only somewhat coherently when you aren’t pounding pints of beer!” He replied sarcastically.
“No, I mean how can you give up when your almighty brother, the great tracker and most handsome man, is in your presence?” Tola asked somewhat harshly. “Ezra said the Spirits have already passed through here, right? So we track them all the way to the Secluded village. They still have a map, don’t they? Am I right?”
“I’m not saying it…..I won’t say it!” Hira said angrily.
“Yes you are…only women can hold it in and not admit to anything. So, just say it.” Tola replied as he smiled deviously at his brother. “It’s a fatal flaw with all men and it will eat us up inside if we do not say….those…three…words.”
“EAT… MY… ASS!” Hira yelled.” There, that’s three words!”
“I’m waiting!” He replied.
“NO!” Hira said sternly.
“Still waiting!” He said again.
“Ughhhhhhh! DAMMIT!” Hira shouted. “DAMMIT, DAMMIT, DAMMIT!”
“It’s just three words…I know you can do it, I have faith in you.” Tola replied.
“OK!….YOU…ARE…RIGHT!” Hira yelled at the top of his lungs.
“Now teach my wife how to say that and you’ll be ready to marry Kana.” Tola chuckled. “Not like you’re ever really gonna be ready, but that will help.”
“Piss off!” Hira said as he mounted the horse and rode off.
“YOU’LL BE BACK…..ASSHOLE!” Tola shouted with his hands cupped around his mouth as if it would help him project his voice. “Dumbass!”
CHAPTER 4: A Lost Friend
It had been hours since Hira rode off without his brother but Tola wasn’t giving up on his brother’s kindness or compassion. He followed the trail straight into the first raider camp, which was built haphazardly over a small winding creek. As he approached the front of the disheveled makeshift fort he could see bodies, numbering close to thirty or more strewn about along the water’s edge. Most were missing limbs, some heads and yet some were almost unrecognizable if it wasn’t for pieces of armor still attached to the chunks of flesh. Tola couldn’t tell what race most were because of the limbs scattered about like piles of leaves blown in by a storm.
He took a minute to enter the hut but it seems that the entire place was already picked through fairly well. There were no weapons or armor of any kind. There were torn pouches and wallets that were void of anything but blood. “It looks like whoever did this claimed all the loot too. If it was the Spirits then why do they need such inferior trinkets?” Tola asked himself. He continued on searching, hoping to find something they had missed, such as a map.
He quickly exited through the back, grabbing a few poached mackerel pieces on his way out. He scarfed them down and was about to leave when he spotted a small gourd sitting on a rock in the middle of the creek. He was about to leave and disregard it but something told him to check it out. He approached cautiously, looking around to see if there were any remaining survivors waiting to ambush him. As he got closer he could smell the hops and the wheat as well as sweet maple trees. “Nooooo. Could that be what I think it is?” He asked himself.
As he carefully reached the rock he ducked down and looked around everywhere for a few minutes hoping that it wasn’t a trap. He saw no trip wires or concealed vines in the sand nor any footprints so he decided he would grab it and dash. He backed up a few paces then dashed straight toward the rock, grabbing the delicious gourd filled with his favorite maple meade. He continued running through the water and back to dry land before he decided to stop and take a swig. It was of course the very beer that they painstakingly produce in the Maple Village which he knows all so well. Instead of chugging it and finishing it in half of a minute he decided to sip it along the way. He walked backwards for a few paces making sure he wasn’t being followed then turned to head to the next camp.
Quite a while later Tola came across another raider camp only this one was easily five times larger than the first. He took out his looking glass and scouted the entire area before approaching. He could see smoke billowing from inside the main building, which was even nicer than his own house. It too was nestled close to the creek, which by now was nearly the size of a river. He approached it with caution but eventually found a piles of bodies all clad in leather armor. The flames had already consumed one hut and were quickly dancing their way across the courtyard to the main building. Yet again the bodies were stripped of weapons, sashes and wallets, which were all turned inside out. “Whoever took this camp out must be rich by now.” He said to himself.
As he left the camp he noticed a cluster of tree branches shaking in the large Oak tree just ahead of him. There was no wind and the woods seemed to be presently void of wildlife, so he knew that he was being followed. He continued on without giving the tree any attention and walked down the path. He looked over his shoulder from time to time until he confirmed that someone was indeed there. He walked up the hill in front of him and stopped at the summit. He took out his Meade and slurped the last drop before chucking the gourd down into the water. While he pretended to be drinking the other meade that he found he scanned the immediate area looking for movement. He eventually located his follower who had stopped in the brush behind, quite a ways away from him. Tola decided to move on, up over the hill and hide up in the brush just ahead. His follower was too far behind to see past the hill so he dove into some bramble and waited. The only way was to find a great hiding place and make himself completely invisible all the while learning everything he could about this being.
Minutes went by and nobody showed, so he decided to sit quietly in the weeds and wait for a little while longer. Just as he scanned the area for a second and third times he noticed that his follower was very close to his location. The figure was cloaked in a dark green tunic which matched the pine trees nearly perfectly. As the being walked close to the bramble it stopped walking and crouched down. Tola watched as it took a gourd from its satchel and began drinking. Tola closed in on it to get a much closer view. He determined that the figure was a young male, a youngling probably a bit younger than Ava. The boy had on mostly leather armor with matching gauntlets and boots, both yielding animal patterns etched onto the smooth surface. His headgear was nothing more than a small leather hat with a retractable veil that he must use to hide himself. Tola admired this kid but he knew he needed to confront and interrogate him. Was he Sidoan, Dulvar or Brevian? Tola definitely couldn’t tell without uncovering the boy’s face. As the youngling set down his satchel and took out a small looking glass, Tola made his move.
He jumped out of the bramble like a lion pouncing on a gazelle and tackled the boy to the ground. He wrapped his arms around the boy’s shoulders then behind his neck while wrapping his legs around the boy’s torso, completely incapacitating him. The kid tried to get free but realized it was no use and gave up. He now seemed to be scared and started to cry. Tola held him tightly for a few minutes and tried speaking to him first in Dulvar then in his own language. As the boy stopped crying for just a brief moment Tola loosened his grip then grabbed ahold of his sash so he couldn’t escape.
“Hold on there little one…….I’m not going to hurt you. Just calm yourself a bit and breathe.” Tola said calmly. “Sit down and let’s talk. Tell me, what is your name?”
“Toruk. My….my…name…is…is Toruk!” The boy replied in between sniffles. “Please….l…l…l…let me go.”
“I will in a moment but first tell me why you are following me, are you some sort of tracker?” He asked.
“Yes. I track w….w…w…wild…an…animals and some…sometimes…people.” Toruk replied, as he tried to pull away.
“SIT YOUR ASS DOWN BEFORE YOU GET HURT, KID.” Tola yelled as he pushed his butt to the ground and dragged him closer. “STOP FIDGETING DAMMIT.”
The boy did as he was told and just stared back at his captor as if he was utterly defeated. He folded his hands in his lap and tried to stop sniffling. He dried his eyes with his sleeves and wiped his nose without once taking his eyes off Tola.
“My name is Tola.” He said with a smile. “I too, am a tracker. I’ve been tracking people and animals since long before you were born. That’s how I knew I was being followed and how I was going to easily lose you. Did you learn anything while watching me?”
“Yeah. You like to drink and you scratch your butt a lot.” Toruk replied.
“Besides that, smartass!” Tola said with a chuckle. “I mean, did you track my footprints and follow my patterns? A good tracker can find the slightest depression in the dirt and tell just how big and how fast his subject is. Bramble has a distinct smell that masks body odor as well as the ability to camouflage an individual. What you should have done was continue on and hide up in a tree, watching the bramble move from up high. Bramble is highly flammable too so a nicely placed flaming arrow and your subject immediately flees. Then you can track him as he loses sight of you, while he panics. Then you have the advantage again. Do you hear what I am saying?”
“Yes.” Toruk replied. “How long did you know I was tracking you?”
“Since the first raider camp.” He replied. “You need to bathe more often, kid. You can’t sneak up on someone if your smell reaches them before you do.” He chuckled.
“You are very nice….do you have children?” He asked.
“Yes, I do.” He answered as he smiled at the youngling. “I have two daughters and a grandson. One daughter, Gemma is a little younger than you, she’s six. My grandson Odin is almost two and my other daughter Kana, is now about twenty. She's actually the one I’m tracking. She is with her battalion just ahead of us. I’m sure you have seen them.”
“The group of Dulvar beauties?” He said as he smiled.
“Aren’t you a little young to be thinking about girls?” Tola asked. “But yes, those Dulvar beauties as you call them, are the ones I’m tracking. They may be beautiful but when they are together they are very powerful. They all love children and would never hurt a single one but if you were a young man, a warrior, we would not be having this conversation. Korra is their leader and my daughter Kana, is her second in command.”
“They are so beautiful.” Toruk said as his smile widened and his eyes closed. “One of them blew me a kiss before they rode off. I was tracking them but I don’t have a horse so….I lost them. She didn’t say her name but she had the face of an angel and the butt of a goddess.”
“Alright, maybe you are a little older than I thought.” Tola said as he smirked at the kid. “I’ll have to admit you got me there…butt of a goddess. I need to speak to your parents….I don’t know what they are teaching boys these days but talking like that is gonna get you slapped in the face. Women are this world’s most beautiful creations and need to be treated with the utmost respect. It’s ok to admire them and every facet of their existence but shouting out things like that is not appropriate. It’s somewhat disrespectful too and these ladies earned their titles as elite warriors. They can kick my ass without breaking a sweat.”
“They are Elite Dulvar Spirits?” He asked excitedly.
“Yes, each and every one of them. They are the ones who are sent out when things get heated and believe me they get the job done quickly. Their sheer speed is something to fear in itself. But they are not only extreme soldiers, they are also friends, wives, daughters and mothers. They are what we will all hopefully evolve into, our future generations, I mean. Kana was just about your age when we rescued her. She was forced to fight and was gravely injured when we found her. She could have killed us both but she reached out to us for help. We saved her life and in turn she saved thousands more. It was her hard work and sheer will that helped us end the war between us and the Dulvar. She is absolutely the most amazing woman I have ever met. Just don’t tell that to her twin sister or to my wife.”
“She has a twin sister?” Toruk asked. “Is she a warrior too?”
“No actually….she is your Queen. She is the High Queen of all races. Queen Leana is her name.” Tola replied as he began to choke up a bit.
“You love them, don’t you?” He asked.
“Yes. I love them all. They are the only reason I still breathe.” Tola said as he began to sniffle. “And one of them is lost out here somewhere. We set out to find her but we were attacked by our own kind. And of course, somehow I lost my horse and my brother along the way. He went on ahead but I couldn’t can’t catch up to him. I tracked his horse but I’m sure he is far, far ahead of me.”
“He’s probably at our village.” Toruk yelled excitedly. “Does he look like you only darker and taller?”
“Piss off kid.” He replied. “Yes, he’s taller and darker.”
“Why did you tell me to piss off?” He asked. “Are you mad at me?”
“I’m only joking.” Tola said as he rubbed the boy’s shoulder gently. “I’m shorter than most and that is the first thing they notice. It’s an inside joke, I guess. No, I’m not mad at you. But it would be great if you could show me how to get to your village.”
“Of course. We love having visitors, as long as you don’t try to kill us, that is. And since your friends killed all the bothersome raiders, we will be more than happy to help your battalion.” He said warmly.
“Lead on my new friend.” Tola said as he rubbed the kids head and smiled.
The two walked briskly down the trail, following the creek until it reached its source. As they came up to the crescent shaped valley they stopped at the edge and looked down. To their right was the river which flowed briskly down to a beautiful cascade of waterfalls. They were over a hundred feet up with a wonderfully concealed village at the base of the great falls. There were wooden steps and bridges that covered the mountainside and reached all the way to the village entrance. There were manned guard towers along the ridge as well as near the top of the falls itself. Toruk waved to one of the guards on the tower then brought Tola down to his village.
“That’s my brother Garo. He’s a lot older than me and chases all the girls around. They seem to like it because they always gather around him.” He said as he shook his head. “I wish he would teach me how to get girls…he’s so cool. I wish I was as cool as him.”
“You already are, my friend.” Tola replied. “If you really want to get a girl’s attention, show them kindness and above all…be yourself. If you act like someone else they will lose interest. I am married and still have at least two other women who want to marry me, maybe more. I just don’t show off or parade around saying how great I am. I bring them flowers and things they like. I talk to them kindly and NEVER interrupt them. I listen and help them with things they would never have thought I knew anything about. If you know how to make a bow or a sword, that’s great. But if you know how to paint a picture or know about different types of flowers, then you will show them you are interested in the things they like too. Of course my daughter is a know-it-all and can build a better bow than I can. She also has far more knowledge about plants than I ever will, so she is VERY hard to impress.”
“Wow, that sounds like a lot of work.” He replied.
“Not if your heart's in it.” Tola responded. “Your heart can help you achieve great things, even those you thought impossible. Say…your brother doesn’t seem like too good of a teacher if he hasn’t shared these kinds of things with you. Maybe you can teach him a thing or two.”
“Yeah, maybe. That one girl did blow me a kiss.” He said as he smiled.
“The one with the butt of a goddess?” Tola asked jokingly.
The two finally made their way down the steps and to the front gate. The gatekeeper and a few others stepped in front of Tola and crossed their spears, denying him entrance. The boy stepped up to one of them, whispered something into his ear then pointed at his new friend. He looked over at a Tola then down at the boy as he continued to listen. He then glanced over at his fellow soldiers and motioned his head toward the gate indicating he was allowed to pass. They immediately lifted their spears and the gates opened.
As the two passed through they immediately had a plethora of eyes fixed upon them. They seemed more curious than anything as the pair slowly walked over to the very large cottage in the center of the path. The cottage door opened and there stood a large cloaked figure with its face completely covered. The figure was much taller than Tola himself and was cloaked in a dark green robe. The hood was deep and wrinkled as a dark veil covered the face. It seemed to be watching Tola’s every move just by the way it repositioned its body and the way it seemed to lean toward the way they were walking.
“Who is that?” Tola asked in a whisper.
“He’s the overlord.” Toruk replied. “He’s usually quiet but he’s not much of a threat. He just watches and usually doesn’t even say anything. He never shows his face to anyone so nobody has ever seen him. His face is always covered along with his hands too. He could be Dulvar or a ghost for all we know.”
Tola waved but the figure turned away and closed his door. “Not very friendly I see.” He said promptly.
“Nope!” Toruk replied. “And he’s in somewhat of a good mood today. But ever since your friend came here he’s been a little uptight. Maybe he’s hoping you’ll take her with you when you leave.”
“What friend?” He asked as he stopped and faced Toruk while grabbing his shoulders. “Are you talking about a Dulvar female named Shya?”
“Uhhhh…yeah! That’s her name….I couldn’t remember for the longest time.” He answered as he slapped his forehead and began shaking his head.
“Can you bring me to her?” Tola asked with great excitement in his voice.
“Sure!” He said confidently. “But don’t expect a hug or anything from her, she’s a bit grumpy too.”
Toruk took his friend’s hand and led him to the Eastern Gate where there stood a small solitary hut made mostly of clay and straw. It had only a single window that was covered with a large dilapidated tapestry with faded Dulvar markings on it. The doorway was mostly open but adorned with nearly twenty rows of assorted beads and shells, suspended by rope, from the upper jam to the floor. Outside was a small wooden barrel that was cut in half and stood upon a tree stump which resembled a poorly constructed sink. Next to it was a small fire spit that was holding a small pot filled with beans, roasting gently above the flames. Directly next to it was a very small kettle that was steaming a little and smelled like hibiscus and honey.
As the two approached they slowly crept to the door and listened. They could hear a female voice singing and humming from inside as sounds of metal hitting wood could be heard in between breaths. It sounded like someone was practicing their sword skills on a tree trunk Tola thought to himself. Was it indeed Shya? He began to wonder as his heart leapt in his chest and his eyes began to well. Tola wanted to stop for a moment to listen but the boy decided that he was going to continue on and enter the hut. Tola grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back behind him as he peeked around the door post.
“You wouldn’t happen to have any good Maple Meade for an old friend, would you?” Tola said as he spoke directly into the doorway.
The sounds of metal clanging stopped and the humming quickly ceased. As he stood very still with a quaint smile across his face, he could hear a sharp noise that sounded much like a metal sword hitting dry dirt followed by the fast patting sounds of running footsteps. He stepped back a few paces and waited for someone to emerge as the footsteps abruptly stopped. Two dark and beautifully toned arms pushed through the curtain of shells and beads, separating them ever so eloquently. Immediately a face peered out and rested on top of the left hand, which was pressing firmly on the door jamb. Tola could only see half of the being’s face but it was like a cool drink of water to a thirsty desert goer. Her eyes were silver and bright with a solitary tear forming on the lower lid. Her skin was as soft as velvet and dark as coconut shells. Her lips were painted silver and glistened beautifully in the sunlight. Without a doubt in his mind he knew at that moment he was indeed looking at his wonderful friend Shya.
“SHYA…IT…IT…IS YOU!” Tola cried loudly.
Without saying a word she sprinted out of the doorway and jumped straight into Tola’s arms. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck and her legs firmly around his waist. She squeezed him so tightly that he didn’t need his arms to support her so instead he used them to caress her lower back. The two stood there for a moment when she pulled her head back and gave him a very sweet and passionate kiss on the lips. He was so happy to have found her that he made no attempt to resist her affections. They kissed for a moment then she pressed her head against his cheek and squeezed hard against him.
“Wow…I’m hanging out with you from now on!” Toruk said as he seemed very impressed with his new friend.
“She is one of my best friends and I came all the way here to find her.” Tola explained as he turned and looked at Toruk. “Friends may come and go but a best friend never leaves, no matter how far away they are.”
“What? That makes no freaking sense.” He replied as he squinted back at the two still engaged in a warm embrace. “Oh…you mean in your heart. Clever, very clever.”
“Listen to this man, he speaks the truth.” Shya cried as she smiled at the boy.
“Are you his wife or something?” He asked.
The two closed their eyes and remained silent. Neither knew the correct response because they knew in their hearts that is what they wanted, but in life it may never be so. Tola kissed her cheek over and over again as he couldn’t believe he had finally found her, unharmed. He had nightmares about finding her enslaved or betrothed to another but in the worst ones, she was dead. He knew he had to let go because his feelings were getting the better of him and he knew at one point he won’t be able to control himself. He dreamed of her quite often and every dream was usually very sensual. He loved her and wanted to know her the same way he knows his own wife and she could sense it.
“I know we both want the same thing and I would be a fool to deny it, but we can’t.” She whispered in his ear.
“I’ll send the boy away.” Tola whispered back.
“It’s not the boy…it’s your wife.” She said as she looked deep into his eyes and sighed. “She means more to me than one night of pleasure with you. Or even many nights for that matter. I could not live with myself if I gave in to my desires and hurt her. I know you couldn’t either.”
“Oh, I could live with it because she already said she would take you as a wife to us both.” Tola said as he smirked. “But you are right, without her here it could be considered being unfaithful. So… just point me to the coldest body of water and let me soak for a minute or so.”
“As you wish.” Shya said as she picked him up by the waist and carried him over to the side of her hut and let go. He slipped down the bank and into the creek below. It wasn’t very deep but was indeed cold. He sat down in a shallow part and started to shiver a little. She looked at him then blew him a kiss before heading back inside.
“You are the luckiest man I know, you have two wives.” Toruk cried as he stared at Shya while she walked away. “Wow, another goddess…I can’t wait to grow up!”
“It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, trust me.” Tola yelled to his friend. “Hey buddy, can you see if the fire is still going, I'm getting kind of cold.”
Tola climbed out of the water then stood by the fire, wringing his tunic out. Shya tossed him a fresh one out the window then went back to her training. Toruk hugged Tola then went home for the night, as his mother began calling him. He changed quickly then stoked the fire for another minute before deciding to turn in himself. As Tola entered her tiny hut, Shya was laying there on her cot sharpening one of her daggers. “Is that for me?” He asked. “Are you going to kill me in my sleep?”
“Not hardly.” She replied. “Why would I kill one of my best friends? It would make more sense to kill Deana and make it look like an accident so that I could have you all to myself. Besides, I’d rather have you as a friend than not at all. “
“Good to know.” He replied. “Tell me something…why did you leave the Palace?”
“I don’t want to talk about that right now.” She said as she put her dagger away and blew out her candle. “Good night.”
Tola sat on the floor for a while before kneeling next to her cot and kissing her on the cheek. She reached her arm over and grabbed his wrist, pulling him closer to her.
“Come to bed.” She said softly.
“Do you think that’s wise?” He asked.
“If you wish to continue breathing, then yes.” She replied.
He climbed onto the cot behind her and wrapped his arms around her neck and waist. She kissed his hand then pulled his arm tighter to her stomach. He kissed the lobe of her ear, then her neck and shoulder before resting his head on the pillow.
“I love you, Tola.” She said sweetly.
“I love you.” He said as she turned completely around and faced him.
“Deana is the luckiest woman on this planet.” She whispered. “I’ve decided that I want to come home to you and her, is that alright with you?”
“Of course. But what about the Southern Dulvar Palace?” He asked.
“I didn’t want to go there alone, without you or Jade, I wouldn’t survive if there was an ambush. Besides, I really need my sisters beside me.” She cried.
“Where is Jade?” He asked.
“She is home with her family.” She said with great joy in her voice. “I found others like her and they took her in. I’m happy for her but sad for myself because I lost a friend. She was such a good puppy.”
“She still is.” He said then kissed her on the lips. “We’ll see her again one day.”
She kissed him once more then snuggled her face just under his chin before falling asleep. He kissed the top of her head then closed his eyes as he began to think about Deana. He knew it would be a while before he would see her again so he held Shya tight and pretended it was her. He still wondered where his brother went but he is an adult and he can take care of himself.
Morning came and Tola woke up to an empty cot. He sat up and looked around for Shya but all he could hear outside was people talking and laughing. As he finished getting dressed he stepped outside and saw Hira in the distance cooking breakfast with the entire battalion of Spirits huddled in a circle, all enjoying a meal together. He immediately ran over to the group and sought out his daughter. She was sitting next to her love helping him crack eggs and cut up fruit. She passed a large bowl around and the spirits all helped themselves to fresh apples, pears and mangoes. He walked up to Kana and stood behind her, tapping his foot swiftly. She turned around and looked up at him. She said not a word as she jumped to her feet then straight to his arms.
“Papa!” She cried. “I missed you so much. I’m so glad to find you here but I’m not too happy about who I found you with.”
“We slept next to each other, not with each other.” He cried. “I kissed her a couple times and that was it, I promise.”
“That’s really not any of my business but you should know better than to trust her. She might have taken advantage of you while you slept. You do sleep like a bear.” She said sternly as if she was scolding him.
“I would have known.” He replied. “And I don’t sleep like a bear, more like a…a… ok, a freaking bear.”
“Told you.” She replied. “And the reason Gemma was conceived is because you were sound asleep. Ask your wife if you think I’m lying.”
Tola said nothing the rest of the morning as he thought hard about what Kana said. He trusted Shya but was she really capable of such a thing and if she did would it really be considered being taken advantage of, seeing he wanted the same thing. He looked over at Shya a few times as she just smiled back at him. She did have a devious look on her face and that made him very nervous. He sat there for a while eating his breakfast when Kana stood up and began speaking.
“Because we eliminated the raiders for these nice townsfolk, they decided to help us on our quest.” She stated, loudly. “They have given us a map that will lead us right to the Southern Dulvar Palace. They have collected a good amount of provisions to help us get there and back but we have a major problem to face. The Palace is overrun with raiders and they have a lot of heavy weapons. And to make things worse, those scumbags are wearing fortified Dulvar designed armor. They number in the hundreds and they may also have slaves that we’ll need to worry about. So we must be very smart and extremely tactical when we confront them. I went back to the chasm and it sounds like the Skirmishers are reconstructing the bridge as we speak. However it will take them weeks if not longer to complete the bridge so we are on our own for the time being.”
“Our friends here have sent scouts who are traveling northward to see if the old mountain pass is still intact. It is at least a day’s journey each way so we have to make a choice.” Korra added. “We can either wait a few days for the villagers to report back and then send a team over to collect the Skirmishers or we can move forward to the Palace and take our chances.”
“I say we wait for the Skirmishers and go to the Palace with greater numbers and better weapons.” Tola quickly replied.
“I’m sorry Tola but the decision is not yours to make, I was asking the Spirits and the Spirits only. You may stay in attendance but your input will be disregarded.” Korra responded rather firmly. “We are under direct orders of the Queen and I myself will make the final decision.”
Tola stood up and walked straight over to Korra and stopped just in front of her. He looked around at the Spirits as they suddenly became silent. He looked back at Korra and folded his arms in front of her. “The only reason you have a battalion or even a place to call home is because I made a choice to help my enemies instead of destroying them. I reached out to a wounded child and made a promise to always protect her and all of her kind. And now you tell me my voice doesn’t matter and that the Queen, my niece, gave you direct orders to be an ASSHOLE!”
Korra stood quietly and looked at her fellow Spirits to see where their loyalties lay. She looked at Kana who was shaking her head and biting her lip. She looked at Shya, her younger sister and she was holding her hand over her mouth as if she was about to cry. “I am in charge of this battalion and you are not. I will give the final order and they will follow without question. Your daughter is not the Queen and is under my command right here, right now. These Spirits will obey my every word and if I order them to remove you from this team or have your head in a pike, then it will be done. Don’t think because you are the great Dulvar killer turned savior that we still don't despise you and everything you have done to our people. You and your brother wield that piece of shit weapon like it’s your blood soaked trophy just to mock us and treat us like you are superior to us. The only reason you still breathe is because that is what Kana wishes. If she was to ever die then you will undoubtedly be buried next to her only seconds after her body went cold. You would not exist if not for Kana pleading to us to leave you alone. Every night I sharpen my sword hoping for the day that I will impale you with it. Your blood spilling onto the soil is the last thought I have before I close my eyes at night. I once told you that I was in love with you but I have since then regained my sanity and now I see you for who you really are, nothing.”
Kana stood up and stepped in between her sister and her father. She was shaking as she had never had to choose between the people she loved the most. She kissed her father on the cheek as Korra watched with disgust. She then leaned in to kiss her, but she pulled away. “Korra, my sister please listen to me. I beg of you. You are wrong about him.”
“No she isn’t.” Tola said firmly. “There is truth in her words. I was once proud of being the proclaimed Dulvar killer. Yes I carry the sword of my ancestors and they too killed many. I once had great hatred for the Dulvar and dreamt about their total annihilation…every…single…night. I hated everything they stood for and everything they had done. Yes Korra, that makes me nothing in your eyes. But that’s ok because I was once nothing to my own people. But that one day, long ago, I saw something in one small child that made me realize how wrong I truly was. I was wrong when I hated you and I was wrong when I killed so many of your people. I don’t deserve to be here on this quest to find your lost Palace and your lost heritage. I don’t deserve the kindness you have shown me and I definitely do not deserve the love some of you still have for me. So if it makes you feel better Korra, kill me here and let your dreams come true. Let your hatred for me go and use it to end your pain. I do not wish for you to be in this much pain. I’m sorry for what I have done to your kind. I truly am. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t regret killing a single one of your kind. It haunts me and will continue to do so until I draw my last breath. So please…end your pain and strike me down. Kana is your own blood, I am not. She will be upset with you for a long time, maybe the rest of your lives but she will one day forgive you. I just want you to know something. I am part Dulvar too and that makes what I did that much more painful. I changed. I changed because I saw you for who you are and not what people claim you to be. I love each and every one of you. To me, you are the one true race on this planet. It is you who are far better than I and I will never see it any other way. I will always be indebted to you for all that you have done and I know I am and never was worthy. I am nothing. But I still love you and I always will. You have changed my life!”
The crowd sat completely silent as Korra just stared at Tola intensely. She looked over at Kana for a moment as she was holding her father’s hand and was reaching out to take hers. Korra looked at her open hand then touched the very tips of her fingers. She wrapped her hand around her palm and squeezed firmly, making a tight fist. Korra looked up at her and stared deep into her eyes.
“He loves us more than he loves his own life.” Kana cried. “I believe him and I believe in him. I saw it in his eyes long ago. I trusted him even with the fresh blood still dripping from his sleeves. I saw into his soul and it was alive for us. He did not kill us… he killed our body to rid us of the evil building up inside. Our brothers were lost but their souls were saved in the process. Evil would have destroyed everything we are and our souls along with it. Don’t you see…our souls are united in harmony because he devotes his life making it so. The Superus trusts him more than any other being. The one who strengthens and cleanses our souls trusts only him. His heart is pure and he speaks the truth.”
Korra looked over at her sisters then back at Kana as she began crying. She closed her eyes and began breathing heavily. “Forgive me Kana.” She said just before pulling out her dagger and thrusting it into Tola’s abdomen.
“KORRA……NOOOOO!” Kana screamed as she grabbed her father by the shoulders letting him fall onto her. They both fell to the ground as Hira darted to be with his brother. He ripped off his tunic and bunched it before pressing it hard against his brother’s wound. The spirits all stood up and stepped back away from Korra as they looked on in horror. Korra dropped her dagger then quickly ran out of the village.
The door to the overlord’s cottage opened as the overlord himself emerged. He slowly walked up to the crowd and stood before Tola. He spread his arms apart which caused Kana and Hira to fall away from him. It was almost as if they were pawns in a chess game and could not move by themselves. The overlord kneeled down and placed his hand over the wound. As Tola began convulsing the overlord pressed firmly onto his skin, causing them to stop. After only a minute or so Tola stopped breathing. His chest no longer rose and his gills fluttered one last time. Kana screamed and began pounding the ground as Hira tried to comfort her. The overlord then grabbed Kana’s wrist and pulled her effortlessly by her father’s side. She placed Kana’s hand on his heart as the overlord pressed on his wound. He began chanting in Dulvar for a moment then stopped briefly. He then removed his gloves, revealing his soft yet strong Dulvar hands. He removed his hood only to reveal that he was not an overlord, but indeed a female Dulvar Spirit. She had a beautiful face with multiple gold piercings along her brow and cheek. She had a small tattoo of the unity symbol on her forehead as well as a peony in full bloom on her neck. Her eyes were green and her hair was silver streaked with delicate strands of white and black.
She smiled at Kana and began chanting once again. Kana picked up the words quickly and began chanting along with her. The rest of the Spirits joined in too, as did his brother Hira. Suddenly the overlord's hand turned very pale as did her face. It looked to them as if she was giving some of her life force to someone she knew nothing about. After a few minutes she removed hers and Kana’s hands then patiently waited. She leaned over him and placed her head on Tola’s heart as she then seemed to be waiting for his heart to start beating again. She had a very intense look on her face as if she wasn’t hoping for a miracle, but actually waiting for one. She would close her eyes then open them again to look at Kana.
“Wish for him to be alive again, just like you did for that little squirrel.” The overlord said as she placed her hand upon Kana’s.
“He is much bigger than a squirrel, I don’t think it will work.” Kana replied.
“It will work, if you believe it can.” She said with a smile. “Prove to your father here that you believe in yourself. Prove to him that you believe in him and most importantly prove to yourself that you have the power to heal his body like you healed his soul, so long ago.”
“Wait! How do you know all these things?” Kana asked.
“The Superus knows all.” She replied then collapsed to the ground and stopped moving. Hira jumped over to her to check her pulse and listened to her heart but sadly she was already gone.
Kana looked at Hira as he took her hands into his. “Believe that you can revive him. Believe it with every fiber of your existence. I believe it, now you believe it.” Hira said softly as he leaned in and kissed her cheek.
Without closing her eyes or even truly concentrating, she kissed her fathers cheek and whispered to herself. “Please papa…..please come back to me, I need you. I wish for your soul to come back to your body and for life to flow through you once again.”
Just then Tola’s heart started beating again and his eyes opened wide. He looked around and saw the crowd around him as well as the lifeless body of the overlord. “What happened to the overlord?” He asked. “Is the overlord dead?”
“Yes, I’m afraid so. She gave up her life for you and now her beautiful soul is part of you, just like Zed’s.” Kana cried.
“Well that sucks. I was dreaming about her and that she was this beautiful Dulvar Princess and….” He said but then stopped mid sentence as if a powerful thought entered his head.
“She is our sister, Gemma, isn’t she brother?” Hira cried. “She was here this entire time and we could have easily spoken with her. But now she is gone. I only wished that I could have known her. I guess… someday I will get my chance once again.”
“She is a lot like our mother. She loves flowers and animals. She writes poetry and loves music. I can see her memories. I can see them as clearly as I see my own, it appears that they are now mine. She was once a great and loving sister to you, Hira. But fate had torn you apart so that she could help those who were not as strong as you or I. That is why she left. She was needed by so many. She loved her life here, with no regrets and now she is happier than ever.” Tola cried. “I feel each moment of her life in my head as if I had been there, along with her.”
“Your wound, it’s almost……gone!” Kana shouted. “Just like Leana’s leg. Your wound is healed as if it never happened. That is amazing. The power of the Superus never ceases to amaze me!”
“We must find Korra before she does something rash!” Hira said as he tied up his boots and headed to the stable to retrieve his horse. “Come on brother, we need to find her and I think I just might know where she is heading. Kana, grab your horse and follow me. Let the Spirits choose for themselves if they wish to follow or not.”
“We must bury our sister.” Tola cried.
“She was our Overlord, we will hold a proper burial for her.” A voice cried from within the crowd that had formed. “She has been with us for many years, helping us and guiding us on our path. She may have been a mystery to most but our lives have changed because of her. Let us tend to that which is ours.”
“Please take care of her.” Tola cried as he kneeled next to her body and wept. He kissed her cheek then jumped up to assist in the search for Korra.
Kana ran for her horse as did the rest of the Spirits. They quickly began galloping down the path, straight to the great chasm. There were fresh footprints in the soft sand which Tola quickly discovered as he then pointed in the direction they needed to go. They didn’t travel very far from that point when they found Korra sitting on a fallen tree with her dagger in her hands, pressing the blade against her heart. The group halted but never dismounted as Kana and her father were the only ones. She motioned for the rest to stop and stay where they were as she slowly walked up to her sister. She then beckoned for her father to follow and the two cautiously stepped in front of her.
“Korra….please put the dagger away. Please!” Kana asked as tears streamed down her face.
“I am sorry. I don’t know why I felt that I needed to kill him. I had all this hatred built up inside me and I took it out on him. It wasn’t his fault all those Dulvar died, it was Aquina’s. He is dead yet I still feel cheated and betrayed. He took something from me that I never truly had, yet desired so badly. He took away all sense of hope in me. He is dead yet we constantly live in fear. We never know if there are others out there who might be far worse than Aquina. Fear has taken space in my head and I can’t get it to leave. I am sorry I killed your father Kana. I was jealous that he loved you and Shya, but not me. I wanted to be his daughter but when that didn’t seem to work I decided that I wanted to be his wife. I’m so sorry that I hurt you. I don’t blame you if you never want to speak to me again or even if you wish to grab this dagger and plunge it into my heart. I understand my sister.”
“You don’t understand anything, Korra.” She said harshly. “If you understood true love then you never would have been jealous of me. I would gladly give you everything you missed in your life. I would give you my Fiancé or my child if I knew it was truly what you wanted. Especially if you could never find these things on your own. I lived a great life Korra and I know that you didn’t. We are a band of sisters because we have all suffered together. I was one of the lucky ones who was shown love, long before I knew how to give it. You on the other hand only receive the love that you worked so hard to get. For that I am truly sorry. Will you please forgive me?”
“Forgive you?” She asked. “For what? I don’t need to forgive you, I’m the one who needs forgiveness. I killed someone you love.”
“He’s not dead, you buffoon!” She yelled. “The Superus healed him and he is as good as new. Now if only the Superus could heal his head!”
“HE’S ALIVE?” She screamed.
“I’m right here…. Buffoon.” Tola cried as removed his hood and stepped in front of her.
She threw her dagger then jumped into Tola’s arms. She held him tightly for a minute then pulled away to look at his stomach. She lifted his tunic and undergarments to reveal a completely healed wound. There was a scar and some bruising, but nothing else. She looked at her love and kissed him on the lips. Shya stepped closer and just smiled. It seemed that she no longer felt jealous of anyone, and knew that they all loved Tola, their ultimate hero. They were now even happier knowing he was still there with them, because he enriched their lives so much.
The Spirits dismounted then all ran over to Tola. They quickly began fighting amongst themselves as they all tried getting in to show their affections. He was never happier and felt like a huge weight was now lifted off his mind. Was it the entire incident or was it the soul of his missing sister that helped him think with much more clarity? His many years of penned up anger and frustration were now completely gone. After a few minutes of being inundated with everyone’s affections he went to find Korra again and pulled her aside from the rest. She was a bit nervous at first but when she looked into his beautiful eyes she realized she had nothing to fear in him ever again. “Where is the other dagger?” He asked.
“I tossed it into the woods, why?” She replied.
“Just checking, didn’t want a reoccurrence, is all. That really did suck by the way.” He said as he grabbed his abdomen. “Lucky for me I have been awarded great favor by the Superus. I know now why we can’t be as one with them.”
“Enlighten me!” She said as she smiled.
“They are our creators.” He cried. “They have ket….kat, kettlized our evolution for many, many years.”
“You mean CATALYZED, don’t you?” She asked as she began to laugh.
“Ohhhh….I was wondering what a metal pot had anything to do with our evolution. I should really listen when people speak.” He replied, as he too began to chuckle.
“So the Superus told you this?” She asked.
“No! The Infinitus Supreme spoke to me when I was, you know…dead.” He said quietly. “That’s twice now that I’ve crossed over and returned to spread the knowledge of what I have learned. Kana said it was only minutes but it seemed like years. I learned about the beginning of our races and about the Great War. We were once pioneers and even explored far past the clouds and into the void beyond. We had great flying machines that carried people far away in the sky to distant lands. We were separated by vast bodies of water known as seas and oceans. There also exist animals that have gills like us that live in the water much like fish, only much larger. Can you imagine?”
“Whoa…slow down there big guy…I don’t think your brain is quite healed. Giant fish, flying machines…you better head home and find Ciara.” She said as she grasped his temples and shook her head at him.
“I know it’s hard to believe but it’s entirely possible.” Tola yelled. “The birds can fly across the…”
“Across the what?” Korra asked as Tola turned away while she tried to pull him back.
“The ancient bridge builders used the birds to pull their ropes across the Great Chasm. That’s how they did it.” He said excitedly. “Send one of the Spirits to the fallen bridge and have her tie some twine to the bird’s leg. It will most definitely cross the chasm to reach the Solemn Forest…. for food. The twine needs to be very thin and light otherwise the bird will not make it across. The chasm is about a hundred paces across, so we measure out that length and only a few paces more so that the bird can eventually land once it becomes exhausted. They can then tie a rope to the twine and pull it across. We can then use the rope to carry more ropes across then we can build a bridge.”
“Genius!” She replied as she hugged him from behind. “You’d better not turn around because I may not let you leave without taking advantage of you.”
“I’m truly scared of you right now.” He cried. “First you love me, then you kill me and now you want to have your way with me? Yikes! I better run while I can.”
They both laughed as Korra hugged him once more before smacking his ass and sending him off. They immediately regrouped with the battalion and told them of their idea. Vera, the youngest and smallest Spirit, immediately volunteered to go back. Although she was the youngest and barely an adult herself, she has an extensive knowledge of most animals, mainly birds. Ever since she was little she has always had a fascination with birds and learned everything that she could about them, especially their distinct call and habits. With a big smile, she proudly mounted her steed then began making wild bird calls as she rode off.
